His candidacy has run headlong into opposition from a bloc of mainstream G.O.P. holdouts, and he appeared to be losing more ground with each vote.

Instead, he said he would back a plan pushed by some centrist Republicans and Democrats to empower Mr. McHenry - the temporary speaker, whose role is primarily to hold an election for a permanent one - to carry out the chamber’s work through Jan. 3.

In a day of whiplash and uncertainty on Capitol Hill, Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio said Thursday he would push for another vote to become speaker, even in the face of a growing bloc of Republican opposition.

Just hours after the hard-right Republican said he would hit pause on his candidacy and support elevating the interim speaker, Representative Patrick T. McHenry of North Carolina, to temporarily lead the House, Mr. Jordan reversed course yet again and said he would move forward with his bid to win the post.

His decision came after a furious backlash from rank-and-file Republicans including many of his far-right supporters, who said empowering Mr. McHenry ... would effectively cede control of the House floor to Democrats and set a bad precedent.

I love the "bad precedent" bit. 🙃

Republicans seem to be in self-destruct mode.

From the beginning of the Trump era, the entire concept of courage was divorced from virtue and completely fused with two terrible vices: groveling subservience and overt aggression. ...

Few politicians personify this distortion of courage into cowardice better than Jim Jordan, and it is a sign of the decline of the Republican Party that he was even considered for the speaker’s chair, much less a few votes away from becoming the most powerful Republican elected official in the nation, second in line to the presidency.

Is there anything that qualifies him for the position other than his subservience and aggression? His legislative record is extraordinarily thin.

During Jordan’s 16 years in Congress, he hasn’t passed a single bill of his own. According to the Center for Effective Lawmaking, he’s consistently one of the least effective members in the entire Republican Party.

What is Jim Jordan good at, exactly? He’s a Donald Trump apologist, a performative pugilist and a Fox News fixture.

On Wednesday, in a logic-defying interview, Representative Austin Scott tried to claim to CNN’s Brianna Keilar that it was Democrats—not Republicans—who were responsible for Kevin McCarthy’s ouster earlier this month, despite the fact that (1) it was literally engineered by Representative Matt Gaetz and (2) Republicans are the majority party in the House.

“Ninety-six percent of the votes came from Democrats,” Scott said. “So, Brianna, I mean, just factually speaking, there were only eight Republicans and there were 208 Democrats [who voted to oust McCarthy].” To this, Keilar responded, “But, sir, who’s in the majority?” Incredibly, Scott’s answer was, “Well, the Democrats were the majority of that vote.”

“Who’s in the majority in the House of Representatives?” Keilar pressed. “The Republicans are in the majority,“ Scott said, in a moment that you could be forgiven for assuming was a deleted scene from Veep. “But the Democrats provided the majority of the votes to take Kevin McCarthy out of the Speakership.” At one point, Scott told Keilar, “I’m just talking about the facts,” to which she replied, “I’m talking about how it works.” Unfortunately, despite Keilar’s trying, it’s not clear that Scott understands how any of this works.

The Representative from Georgia isn’t the only one confused about who’s to blame here. On Wednesday, asked about his caucus’s dysfunction, McCarthy told reporters, “There’s no chance in the world that Democrats can ever say again that they put people before politics. They made a political decision to try to bring chaos to shut down a branch of government, and that’s wrong.”

These liars are the scum of the scum.

There have always been ideological movements within American political parties. The Republican Party was formed, in part, by adherents to one of the most important ideological movements of the 19th century — antislavery. But, as the historian Geoffrey Kabaservice has observed, “The conversion of one of America’s two major parties into an ideological vehicle” is a “phenomenon without precedent in American history.”

It is the absence of any other aim but the promotion of conservative ideology — by any means necessary, up to and including the destruction of democratic institutions and the imposition of minority rule — that makes this particular permutation of the Republican Party unique. It helps explain, in turn, the dysfunction of the past decade. If the goal is to promote conservative ideology, then what matters for Republican politicians is how well they adhere to and promote conservatism. The key issue for conservative voters and conservative media isn’t whether a Republican politician can pass legislation or manage a government or bridge political divides; the key question is whether a Republican politician is sufficiently committed to the ideology, whatever that means in the moment. And if conservatism means aggrieving your enemies, then the obvious choice for the nation’s highest office is the man who hates the most, regardless of what he believes.

Politico: Trump tells allies he doesn’t support Tom Emmer’s speaker bid

Former President Donald Trump privately conveyed to allies on Friday he does not back House Majority Whip Tom Emmer’s bid for speaker, throwing another wrench into an already chaotic process to find the next person to hold the gavel.

Trump’s conversations come as Emmer has begun privately expressing his interest in the post. The Minnesota Republican, who has been making calls to fellow lawmakers, has emerged as an early frontrunner, having received the endorsement of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

But a sustained offensive from Trump, if one materializes, could spell doom, as any candidate for the job can only afford to lose a handful of votes.

The former president’s top allies are already working to thwart Emmer’s candidacy. Trump supporters have begun passing around opposition research on the congressmember, and the pro-Trump “War Room” podcast on Friday afternoon turned into an Emmer bash-fest.
