Couple of tweet extracts

It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before

have a feeling that this one-time opportunity will not be wasted!

Trump is pushing KJU's buttons, he needs him to blow up before he does. Hold your nerve Kim, what you may do may help the world a lot, I'm not referring to the NK issues.

Its the 12th today, the two leaders have not met yet. Reading a few articles on CNN, it seems everyone else has already decided on the agreement and are discussing terms and issues. How to Back NK into a Corner 101

He's constantly "putting ideas out there" that have come from assorted advisors that he trusts, and putting those out as his own ideas.  He doesn't have the intellectual capacity or memory to process the information and use it to construct anything consistent.

That G7 shambles is an example.  He's been advised (by who and when?) of libertarian zero tariff / free trade ideas which struck a chord.  He's missed the part where many people who support completely free trade also support free trade in labour / open borders.  Someone (else?) has told him that the US has a trade deficit with Canada.  He's not understood that this was trade in goods only and that trade in goods and services was more or less balanced.  He's not understood that if you did have 100% free trade in goods and services, then you're not going to have a trade balance with all your partners, that this doesn't matter, and that you can't then go and put up barriers to get a "balance".  He's not understood that he can't drop all tariffs, subsidies, quotas on agri trade in the US without facing a probably worse domestic backlash than Canada or the EU would face.  But he went in full steam, insulting, abusing, and lying.

The POTUS is meeting with KJU with clear objectives (get a formal peace treaty signed off and get NK to abandon their nuclear weapons and program), but he'll be negotiating this based on the advice he's had that selectively sunk in to his shallow confused mind.  I expect he'll be spewing regurgitated snippets from Alex Jones, Hannity, the Ivanka and Jared show, Bolton etc.  I expect his WH staff will be hailing the meeting as a "huge success" despite it being nothing of the sort.

I don't expect Trump to compromise at all - he probably never has and is probably proud of this as being the key to his greatness.

The worst that can happen today is if they talk and not go into detail, and come away with a general on the same page outcome, more or less "we met, chatted, get along well, we will talk again, it looks good"  Then he gets percieved credibility for just shaking hands and sharing muffins and cheesecake. The best is if it goes belly up, and KJU remains cool, steady and still talking. "This is an important meeting, why he walk away???"

The problem is his many failures are glossed over for his constituents and his ego. Its fine if the other 7 billion people call him a nutter, but that doesnt get anywhere. He needs to drop the ball bigly, rant bigly, and get punished bigly by a vocal majority

I can imagine he is beside himself with this meeting, he knows its big, he knows he cant walk in and just get his demands, and he knows a failure will hurt his pride and self injected importance. We also know that if and when that happens, he will react violently. A point needs to be reached when the international community stops criticising him. All that does is create a news article. It achieves little. They need to band together and fully and heavily admonish him, and tell the world that they cannot work with the US, so they wont. Maybe then the 25% that voted him in will think again, and the 50% that didnt vote, will vote.

This meeting is far more important for the globe than the NK issues. It might be the straw that broke the camels back. Hopefully

Agree

The link I gave just above this, shows what I bolded is standard Trump practice all his life.

That's exactly what I expect.  They're at stalemate, that'll continue indefinitely without compromise.  The risk IMO is that Trump gets confused and decides to go postal. What he tweets after the meeting will be interesting - he's clearly too gutless to argue a point face to face, prefers to use twitter as a vehicle for monologue, and Fox News for a feedback loop.

Notable, that KJU has set a deadline on the meeting. It starts at 9am local time, he is going at 2pm. The first hour is one on one.

Mattis said he does not expect it to include a negotiation over reducing the number of US troops in South Korea — currently about 28,000. He says that, at least initially, this is a matter between Washington and Seoul.

Hm, ok, lets not discuss troops, lets only discuss nukes, and we cant discuss sanctions until we have nukes sorted to US requirements. Is this a meeting or a negotiation or just a laying out of one country's demands???

Donald Trump has weighed in with the summit hours away, saying preliminary meetings are going well but leaving open the possibility of failure (ex Fox News)

I take that as obvious, all negotiations are uncertain. So to state it, he is giving himself a pre determined out.

I'd love to know how he's planning to get a "real deal".  Who's he going to trust to inspect / verify denuclearisation?

He shot the world authority through the heart - and has lost the trust of much of the rest of the world in the process.

With just the two leaders and one translator each for the first two hour meeting, the first meeting will go down in history as no correct record recorded!

The first hour will be Trump asking for advice on how to be dictator. Not much more can happen, I'm pretty sure Trump has no idea on actual details of the North/South conflict or even how many US troops are currently stationed there.

I would like to take bets on how many times Trump uses the word "Great" in his post meeting statements.
