The Supreme Court issued an ethics code on Monday after a series of revelations about undisclosed property deals and gifts intensified pressure on the justices to adopt one. ...

The code, laid out over nine pages, does not place specific restrictions on gifts, travel or real estate deals. But it does caution the justices that they should not take part in outside activities that “detract from the dignity of the justice’s office,” “interfere with the performance of the justice’s official duties,” “reflect adversely on the justice’s impartiality” or “lead to frequent disqualification.”

The rules also prohibit justices from allowing “family, social, political, financial or other relationships to influence official conduct or judgment.” The document cites examples of when justices must recuse themselves from a case, including when they have a “personal bias” or a financial interest.

Experts in legal ethics gave the document measured approval. ...

The code does not specify how the rules would be enforced or by whom. 🙄

This could just as easily go in the Trump thread, but I think this fits here too - most of the Republicans mentioned in here are pretty deplorable! That Maria woman from Fox should be ashamed of herself.

I'm about to start reading the book that story is based off, should be interesting. I bet Fox will look to settle with the other parties suing them for defamation before they go to trial if they can, as Fox know they'll lose.

Vice: GOP Reveals Its Latest Conspiracy: The 'Ghost Bus'

Hop aboard the latest kooky right-wing conspiracy theory about the Jan. 6 Capitol riot: The nefarious “Ghost Bus.”

The image of a spectral public transportation system emerged like a phantom during a bizarre moment in the Congressional testimony of FBI Director Christopher Wray before the Homeland Security Committee. Republican Rep. Clay Higgins of Louisiana peppered Wray with questions about whether secretive buses arrived near the Capitol building on the morning of the riot in January 2021.

Higgins berated Wray for not knowing what a “ghost bus” is, and claimed the term is common parlance among people who know about cop stuff.

"Do you know what a ghost vehicle is?" Higgins asked. “Director of the FBI certainly should. You know what a ghost bus is?"

Wray seemed nonplussed.

“I’m not sure I’ve used that term before,” he said.

“Okay,” said Higgins, skeptically. “Pretty common in law enforcement. It’s a vehicle that’s used for secret purposes. It’s painted over.”

Higgins then pointed at a billboard showing a nondescript picture of a parking garage with several buses in it.

“These two buses in the middle here, they were the first to arrive at Union Station on January 6th,” Higgins said. “These buses are nefarious in nature and were filled with FBI informants dressed as Trump supporters, deployed onto our Capitol on January 6th.”

Higgins characterized this otherwise very boring photograph of buses as just the “tip of the iceberg” of evidence he’s accumulated. Finally, he concluded, with the air of a man about to place his opponent in checkmate: “Your day is coming, Mr. Wray.”

Moments before this strange interaction, Wray affirmed that, contrary to right-wing myth-making, FBI sources did not instigate the Jan. 6 riot.

"If you are asking whether the violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6 was part of some operation orchestrated by FBI sources and, or, agents, the answer is emphatically no," Wray said.

The House Ethics Committee on Thursday found “substantial evidence” that Representative George Santos violated federal law, setting the stage for another push to expel the embattled first-term Republican from New York and prompting him to declare that he would not seek re-election.

House investigators found evidence that Mr. Santos used campaign funds for personal purposes, defrauded donors and filed false or incomplete campaign finance and financial disclosure reports ...

The committee voted unanimously to refer its findings to the Department of Justice, saying that Mr. Santos’s conduct “warrants public condemnation, is beneath the dignity of the office, and has brought severe discredit upon the House.”

Republicans: If we win, we love democracy and the results are legit; if we lose, f__k democracy, it's unfair and besides we actually won.

Maybe there should be an education requirement that everyone participate in teams sports, in particular in private schools, and home-taught children. Every child gets an automatic passing score ... except ... anyone who acts like a dick when they lose gets a failing grade and mandatory re-take.

Ohio Capital Journal: Some Ohio GOP lawmakers attempting to undermine democratic process after voters protect abortion

The decisive legalization and protection of abortion and other reproductive care access in Ohio has infuriated some fringe Ohio Republican lawmakers — so much so that they are threatening to alter the democratic process in their favor.

Issue 1, the proposal to enshrine abortion access into the state constitution, passed 57-43% on election night. Despite this large victory, Statehouse Republicans have been mulling over ways to combat it.

Four State Representatives are described by other Republicans as being on the extreme end of their caucus due to anti-vaccine beliefs, peddling of conspiracy theories, and disapproval of equal protection for the LGBTQ+ community.

Instead of having judges and justices do their job by evaluating abortion issues, the lawmakers want to strip them of their duties due to perceived “mischief by pro-abortion courts,” they said in a news release published on the website for Ohio House Republicans.

“The Ohio legislature alone will consider what, if any, modifications to make to existing laws based on public hearings and input from legal experts on both sides,” the press release said.

An initial draft of the legislation was first reported by The Plain Dealer/Cleveland.com and then sent to WEWS/OCJ by a Republican in the House.

“The Ohio General Assembly shall have the exclusive authority over implementing Ohio Issue 1,” the draft says. “All jurisdiction is hereby withdrawn from and denied to the Courts of Common Pleas and all other courts of the State of Ohio.”

The draft legislation would also “immediately dismiss” all lawsuits or claims in court and would “vacate” all decisions made by a court, the draft continues. Being found guilty of this could lead to a misdemeanor, which would make it an impeachable offense.

Despite no evidence indicating any election fraud, Gross referenced “foreign election interference” as the reason why Issue 1 passed.

Lear took a different approach, saying the constitutional amendment isn’t valid.

“No amendment can overturn the God-given rights with which we were born,” Lear said.
