The descriptions coming out of the White House describing Trump's state of mind over the last few days all paint a picture of a frustrated and angry executive who feels more and more isolated in his own White House.

Here's how CNN's White House team described the mood:

"The tumult of the past week has fueled a deep and seething anger within President Donald Trump - not an uncommon emotion for the insolent commander in chief - but one that allies and aides say has escalated as he faces a new gauntlet of problems."

Axios' Mike Allen put it this way:

"After a crazy 24 hours, sources close to President Trump say he is in a bad place - mad as hell about the internal chaos and the sense that things are unraveling."

Trump slapped import taxes on steel and aluminium yesterday. Back in January he slapped 30% on solar cell imports. How's that going?

The Hill: SunPower has already started the process of laying off between 150 and 250 workers, largely from its research and development and marketing positions, CEO Tom Werner told The Hill. The cuts will amount to about a 10 decrease in operational expenses.

American manufacturer sunpower seems confident of getting an exemption to continue in business. Apparently there is a queue. I'm sure the Trumpocracy can shorten that queue if the appropriate praise is given to the leader.

Perhaps rather than a difference in morality/honesty of the person posting there's something else going on to explain the inexplicable. Every day - and often several times a day, Trump or someone close to him will do or say something that would have caused conservatives to riot if any past POTUS had said it. You don't need to invent fake news to create anti-Trump propaganda. But criticism fails to gain traction. He's already worse than Nixon, but still holds on to about twice the level of support.

Yes, it's certainly odd.

Perhaps the Dems, as a party, have agreed not to sink to Trumps gutter-brawling level. That is, they'd rather let him cause his own downfall, rather than indulge in the name-calling, abuse, and outright lies that have become Trump's specialty.

But they're out of their league, IMHO. Trump has lowered the bar to carpet level. If the liberals really want to regain power, they need to get down even lower. Roach level.

Hence the principle of the firebreak: to fight the fire with one of at least equal intensity.

Trump crowned? No faux King way!

We need a “post-Trump reconstruction” plan ...

The Trump administration continues to chart “new frontiers in ethical transgression”.

As if the president didn’t have enough conflicts of interest already, his son Donald Trump Jr spent last week touring India promoting the family’s real estate projects.

Newspapers in the country, The Trump Organisation’s largest market outside the US, offered dinner with the presidential scion in return for down payments on Trump-branded condos.

In the course of his four-city tour, Trump Jr also held a private meeting with India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, and was even scheduled to give a foreign policy speech.

We’ve become inured to this sort of “self dealing” under Trump, but we mustn’t accept it as the new normal.

Instead, we should start formulating a comprehensive “de-Trumpification” agenda to ensure no successor can flout the norms of conduct as he has.

That should involve giving legal teeth, including subpoena power, to the Office of Government Ethics, and changing the law to ensure future presidents have to release their tax returns and avoid conflicts of interest.

We need a “post-Trump reconstruction” plan, to “officially mark this obscene presidency as aberrant, a negative example for future generations”.

I wonder if the timing of his crazy punitive tariff announcement was partly due to CPTPP.
He did make incoherent rants about the possibility of joining TPP if he could renegotiate more favourable terms for the US - which by Trump's default view can only mean less favourable terms for everybody else. The tariffs are a kick in the guts to Canada and Australia.

They also signal that the US can't be trusted to honour agreements - if there were (possibly true) grounds for complaint about dumping (due to excess production at this point in a cycle) then there are agreements on how this is sorted out, WTO etc.

When the USA can't be trusted to play to rules they agreed to, then they really can't be trusted at all.

There's actually another theory about the timing. Shortly before Trump announced tariffs, his former adviser dumped millions in steel-related stocks.
