I quite like this piece

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/americas/102040315/republicans-want-donald-trump-to-back-off-his-international-tariffs-proposal

In the real world you have Apple vs Android, Ford vs Holden, National vs Labour

In the US you have Trump vs Democrats and Trump vs Republicans, plus Trump vs Rust Belt that voted him in

He just doesn't get that tariffs he charges other countries, are not paid by the other countries, they are paid by his citizens that use those imported, tariffed products

CNN - Nunberg episode marks the dawn of Mueller's March madness

[includes an interesting video clip]

While much of what Nunberg said was insulting toward Trump and his staff, he also insisted that the President did not conspire with the Russians during the election, offering a rather backhanded defense of his former boss.

"Vladimir Putin is too smart to collude with Donald Trump," Nunberg told CNN. "Donald Trump couldn't keep his mouth shut if Putin colluded with him."

And another one bites the dust ...

CNBC - Gary Cohn resigns as Trump's top economic advisor

  • Gary Cohn has resigned as White House chief economic advisor.
  • Cohn's planned departure comes on the heels of a decision by President Donald Trump to impose stiff tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
  • The former Goldman Sachs president had strongly opposed tariffs.

Donald Trump 'lacks necessary expertise' for North Korea nuclear missile disarmament talks

  • Donald Trump’s administration lacks the expertise to engage in such sensitive talks as the White House lacks the strategic expertise to engage constructively, according to former officials and analysts.
  • The State Department lacks senior diplomat staff following a series of cuts, and the top diplomat dealing with North Korea, Joseph Yun, is departing his post this week.
  • The US has also lacked a permanent ambassador to South Korea since Trump took office in January 2017 ...

Why you should give a sh*t about Trump’s tariffs, explained by an economic historian

Trump: “We’ll do it in a very loving way. It will be a loving, loving way. They’ll like us better and they’ll respect us much more.”

What is he on?

A short article, worth reading.

Lets say that the new 500 jobs use workers who are already employed somewhere. They will continue to work, probably at better money. Them and the other 300 million will pay more, as steel and alu is now more expensive. The only winner is one company who can now charge 25% more for its product

Trump has invited representatives from the steel and aluminum industry to bolster his case that tariffs will improve job conditions and benefit American plants.

https://edition.cnn.com/2018/03/08/politics/tariff-donald-trump-national-security/index.html

Wow, that's a good idea....... Nothing like an objective, unbiased view to get support. I assume NZ exports aluminium to the US? We wont be part of the security measure exemptions

That's merely called "redistribution".

There is no overall plus side.  These steel tariffs aren't new - they've been tried before (Bush steel tariffs 2002) - and they failed, consensus being that they had an overall negative effect on GDP and employment growth.

I think the wild optimists suggested that if the Trump tariffs worked then they'd add 100,000 jobs to the US steel industry, (but lose 150,000 jobs elsewhere in the US economy).  To put that in context, under the last 6 years of Obama's presidency jobs were added to the US economy at the average rate of 174,000 / month.  Under Trump's presidency, the rate of job creation has fallen - so much for "MAGA" and more jobs.

The TPP was signed yesterday, without the USA. According to reports this means lower overall tariffs, without the "tariff war". Obviously Trump missed the boat on this one.

That's just trade - where Trump chooses to implement policies directly opposed to advice from selected experts in his own administration, and for whom blind loyalty to the Trump agenda is a primary requisite.  His secretary of state has called him a f*cking idiot, he's at war with his AG, he's firing people like he's still running a reality TV show. Apparently he's now even at war with SHS because he's not happy about comments she tried to make in defense of him - which backfired - over the issue of paying off the porn star he'd been bonking while his third wife was at home looking after their newly born child.

"If you throw out September of this year, when job gains were depressed by hurricanes, Trump's monthly average is closer to Obama's, at 185,000, but the change in administrations doesn't appear to have had much effect on the overall job market."

Apparently Canada and Mexico are the major steel exporters to the US, so last time, they made hay bigly when they were also exempted from the tariffs under Bush. Tariffs cancelled a year later

Makes sense. An economy like the US is a slow moving behemoth, any regular changes, good or bad take time to filter in. What Trump means is that due to Obama's growth in employment, we are still getting that benefit under me, so on that, I shall take credit. Should employment fall, that's due to Obama. "Let's see"

I have to laugh at being accused of posting "fake news" when the accuser used a quote like that - to paraphrase:

"Let's cherry-pick to make an exception - so we can refute a fact by making an accusation that it's "fake news".

That (relative job growth) wasn't the point of my post anyway - which was that Trump's tariffs won't work, that supported not just by economic experts - but by analysis of relatively recent history.

Typical Trump supporter - blind, irrational, reactionary.
