Things are looking much closer.

In the Herald’s Poll of Polls, there is currently a 60 per cent probability National and Act will have to come to an agreement with NZ First to get the 61 seats needed to govern.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/election-2023-christopher-luxon-grilled-by-northland-residents-on-national-working-with-winston-peters/FQFK77KHPZH2RETYPH74YMJOYM/

It would be a bit embarrassing if National and Act couldn't govern after all those millions of campaign donations. (edited typos)

Why Luxon does not want risk a leaders debate, only sees downside?

Plus highlighting differences in party approach to Winston and other things?

Disparity of funding does raise concern about democracy being bought.
Muldoon and Dancing Cossaks were crude, but effective for the time.
Of course Australia has prospered by having built up its retirement investment fund decades before we even started.
Social media after 'Cambridge Analytica' led the way can do so much more with channels providing very targeted matching of people and message.

Village idiot Liz Gunn keeps telling people who vote for her to take a photo of their voting form. Isn't that illegal? I'm sure that you aren't allowed to use a camera anywhere inside any voting place, never mind inside the voting booth?

It might be illegal to share photos of voting papers, but I'm not sure whether or when the act of taking the photo could be illegal. It seems to be permitted for overseas voters uploading their voting papers.

I fancy I saw a sign when I did my early vote yesterday saying something about no cameras permitted inside the polling centre, but I could be wrong. I didn't take any photos anyway.

So...it would have been 4 votes for her but she forgot to take a photo of hers ?

I am so detached from the election this year, it has all been spin and I dislike the main policies of all parties, and hearing the same thing for others too. There isn't a single one that is looking at brings in a much needed capital gains tax on property and business. Instead there have been whacky wealth tax suggestions (not even indexed to inflation) which very few other counties have and some of those that do want to get rid of it.  Although I did watch some of the leaders debates, some of the hosts have been hopeless, and not controlling things. Many of the questions have also been hopeless. The big question I haven't heard anyone ask is what is the population that NZ should be in 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, 15 years and 20 years etc, as that is really the key to NZs future. Currently all spending, infrastructure and houses hinge on this. We likely wouldn't have a housing crisis if we hadn't used immigration to significantly increase the population over the last 10-20 years. And we seem to be going back to high immigration for short terms gain. But it causes long term pain, as we then aren't investing in infrastructure and health etc for that increase in population.

Just noticed that there is a article today on this very subject, and asking why it isn't one of the issues https://www.interest.co.nz/public-policy/124669/record-immigration-will-put-pressure-nz%E2%80%99s-population-infrastructure-and

https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/09-10-2023/what-the-port-waikato-byelection-means-for-the-next-parliament >> due to the death of the Act party candidate in Port Waikato, they will have a by-election after the main election this weekend. This article explains why Port Waikato could be a kingmaker seat - and why it may remove the need for a second election (if no one wants to work with Winston).

Edit: also just saw that Liz Gunn lost her court case with the Electoral Commission to add more candidates after her party's list had already been submitted, HA HA! 😀

Its scare tactics, for the brass ring of course they will work with Winston.
All the Power, and what their donors forked out the $7mil for

Winston also knows that if he is to get his prize, he needs them too.

ACT will just have to put a peg on their nose every cabinet meeting :-)
They have $4mil dollars donors wanting to stamp influence on new Government too.

Saw Christopher Luxon at Scratch this morning as I was getting my coffee. It's too bad the Green Party logo on my hoodie is quite subtle...

I have no doubt they'll come to a deal to get over the line in the first instance. But after that ... it'll be like storing a tank of acetylene next to a gas heater.

The vote was a challenge. The last few elections the choice for me was relatively easy this year, hmmm we really need a 'none of the above' option.

For me it came down to

Who has the least objectionable "Red line" policy

I also did NOT want any minor party to be the tail the wagged the dog.
