I disagree.

I support a REVIEW of the gun laws, and a ban on semi-automatic weapons, but what you are suggesting is over the top.

Following Christchurch terror attack the Government should have put an immediate import and sale of firearms ban in place and should remain in place until a full review is completed.

I don't see any place for private ownership of firearms and hunting crossbows in New Zealand today.

I think that is a bit far - there are legitimate uses for firearms and I think banning them outright doesn't make sense.

To me handguns and military weapons are a different beast to a 22 a farmer uses to kill rabbits or an over and under shotgun for duck shooting. The latter could be used to kill people but it's bloody difficult to kill large numbers of people with a bolt action 22.

While I have a firearms licence, and enjoy their use, I can happily take them or leave them. Don't think that makes me a NRA shrill as you suggest, but that's your opinion. However they are legal to own in NZ, and I will absolutely defend to the bitter end someone's legal right to do something that the law allows. When you have confiscated all the guns and changed the law to make them illegal, fine, I'm sure you'll feel good about yourself. I hope you then start looking at banning trucks too, incase someone decides to follow the example from France...

Blaming pencils for spelling mistakes is about the best you are doing - we need to look deeper than removing the tools that these people are using to commit crimes and fixing the problems that are causing young white males to become radicalised in the first place.

Firearms laws are going to change, our PM has made this clear.

Details aren't clear, but access to semi-automatic weapons are likely to be restricted - or there'll be an outright ban, and hopefully we'll be able to take existing guns made illegal by law change out of circulation by an amnesty (as they did in Aus) and return to the system where not only does a license holder need to be (possibly more thoroughly) vetted than at present, but all firearms need to be individually registered.

There's no disputing the evidence, that the terrorist in Chch had a NZ firearms license gained legally, had a large collection of weapons - all of which may have been obtained perfectly legally and may have been modified to increase magazine capacity, which is hardly a difficult thing to do.

Personally, and as an ex hunter and firearms owner, I'd be more than happy to see all high-power semi-automatic weapons banned, collected, and destroyed. I know some people get "enjoyment" out of ownership of such things, but around 50 people are dead at the hands of one man, carried out in the most horrific manner, live streamed to the internet. It's time to get real - that must never happen again.

Agree, as an ex owner, including a 15 shot semi (Just a .22 Magnum) there is no need to rapid fire, it's merely a convenience in most cases.

Registration and ownership transfer is a must.

There is reported panic buying of firearms right now, an immediate ban would have stopped that. Any review will take a long time and at the point the horse has bolted. I don't give a toss if some gun huggers get their panties knotted because they cannot buy a new toy to go with their make believe DPMs. In my opinion there is no need for private ownership of these weapons in NZ.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Agree, the ratio of genuine and safe to deviants is huge, but measures must be put in place to lock the deviants out. Clearly they will find a way, but making it harder is a start as is the penalty for illegal possession. Genuine owners will not be affected a great deal. A 3 shot magazine I feel would be a good option.

I believe something like this is the case in Holland. Don't know details because I was never interested, but I'm pretty sure gun hobbiests can only own guns if they belong to a recognised club and can only use them on club premises. They can't carry them away or keep them at home. There may be special exemptions for some kinds of weapons used for hunting but I'm not sure. It is very tightly controlled in any case.

I hope the selfish pricks rushing out to buy weapons get absolutely hammered when the law is changed. I have been watching reports of those who have lost friends and loved ones. Most Kiwis are generous in their support and compassion, but some are despicable selfish jerks. Shame on them.

It wouldn't - so banning of private ownership and possession of firearms won't happen.

OTOH I don't know why a farmer/rural dweller/lifestyler would have use for an AR15 military style rifle, or would have too much issue with having the serial number of weapons they do own registered.

Rejection of overreaction (understandable under the circumstances) should not be used to endorse no action. Change is needed.

No you didn't - I did, because that's the probable extent of restrictions that will be sought (or possibly all semi-autos) - not as Mike suggested that all guns would need to be locked up at clubs etc.
