For most of the week, it appeared Washington would avoid a government shutdown.
The Senate passed a stopgap bill on Wednesday, paving the way for House approval. But President Trump blindsided his own allies and chose to pick a fight he cannot win. ...
In life, pain can be a helpful mechanism in that it lets you know you are engaged in behavior that is bad for you.
If you put your hand on a hot stove, it is the resulting pain that makes you pull your hand away lest you are seriously harmed or even killed.
The problem is, in a political context, Trump does not feel any pain. He does not know he is engaged in behavior that is bad for him and those around him.
He thinks he is right, that he won with a great landslide and that he is invincible. And now he thinks his position of “border security” vs. a government shutdown will serve him well.
But in reality, the president and his Republican allies will be the only ones who will suffer.
For the Democrats, the present-day budget fight is a pain-free exercise. ...

The Washington Post - Trump warns of a ‘very long’ government shutdown if Democrats oppose bill that includes border wall money
President Trump warned Friday that a partial government shutdown would last “for a very long time” if Congress does not meet his demand Friday for billions in funding for his long-promised border wall in a stopgap spending measure.
In a spate of morning tweets, Trump sought to pin blame on Democrats for a potential shutdown even though he said last week that he would proudly own one if lawmakers did not provide at least $5 billion toward his marquee campaign promise.
And he suggested that Senate rules should be changed so that Republicans could pass the bill without any Democratic support - a move that a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) promptly dismissed.

The Washington Post - ‘He just re-founded ISIS’: Fox News bucks Trump - again - and Trump is listening, again
“Fox and Friends” host Brian Kilmeade on Friday morning tore into Trump’s other controversial decision this week - to pull U.S. troops out of Syria - and he did it right to the face of Trump’s own press secretary, Sarah Sanders.
Kilmeade even went so far as to say that the president was paving the way for a revitalized Islamic State, also known as ISIS.
“He also is doing exactly what he criticized President Obama for doing,” Kilmeade told Sanders.
“He said President Obama is the founder of ISIS; he just re-founded ISIS, because they have 30,000 men there and they are already striking back with our would-be evacuation. The president is really on the griddle with this.”
“Leaving is helping,” Kilmeade added, repeating: “Leaving is helping.”

In the spirit of Christmas, I think this initiative deserves a prominent mention.
A redneck annoyed at the democratic process in the USA which is blocking Trump's wall funding, has started a GoFundMe campaign to try to raise the wall money privately.
So someone else has responded with an opposing campaign to raise money for ladders to go over the wall. It will be interesting to see which does best.
