I’m not looking for a fan club. I’m not concerned about whether a politician is in my favoured cult or not, I’m more interested in what they do.

Taking many by surprise, car registration fees are going up by $50 over the next two years which will rake in an extra $660m for the Government.

I don't remember hearing about this during the campaign either. Maybe they forgot to mention it?

Public transport fares are also about to increase which Labour leader Chris Hipkins has said will be a "massive blow to low-income households".

Oh great. Like they doesn't cost enough already 🙄

I guess any chance of National doing half price public transport like the last Government did would be out the window. As long as it's tax cuts and more roads...

Looks like a one term government, looking at all the extra charges they’re putting on transport.

Can’t wait for the next election.

They are even hiking fines, to increase the government coffers, or as they’d put it as more of a deterrent.

At least smokers are better off money wise if excise tax is frozen on them. Cough, Cough.

Seriously to hell with this government and what it is now doing to those people like my Wife fully reliant on public transport. My Wife is already annoyed that her monthly train ticket has gone up by 10% (to $330/mo) and now this.

I get it's in the future but that's beside the point. National bitched and moaned about Labour increasing fuel taxes, promised not to in the first term but announced far greater increases and cuts to services instead along with technically a new tax. My bets are they're going to target GST next.

New Zealand wanted change when the three stooges were voted in, well they got change. Anyone calculated how far back this has taken New Zealand?

Half price public transport is a subsidy for people who have it available to them to use from those who don't. I don't get why people in West Auckland should be paying more for the people on the North Shore to get a cheaper ride on the busway they've had for decades before anyone else in Auckland got one.

And as fun to ridicule National for 'roads only', having Labour with an absolute majority with the backing of the Greens ultimately resulted in zero rapid transit for Auckland or Wellington ever actually getting built. So functionally the outcome of a National government and any other in this department is exactly the same.

Serious answer - no, RUCs go up equivalently. Which I'm fine with; I'm also fine with the increase in registration fees. They're a joke compared to Australia - your Ford Ranger Wildtrak pays between $546 and $788 AU annually for registration there depending on the options and most common EVs would be in the $546 bracket.

What I'm not fine with is that the massive roads programs are going to be funded by taking money out of public transport. It's a plan straight out of the 1950s. To be fair, so was everything they campaigned on so no surprises there.

Of course, what they told us was that their transport plan was fully funded, except that it wasn't:

Brown told Stuff the registration increase was decided as part of the Cabinet process, meaning they didn’t see it coming.

As usual for the great economic managers of our time, they had a $660M fiscal hole in their plan.

Too right, John Key was a pretty decent PM. I didn't like everything his government did, obviously, but I did like some others. Luxon is a vacuous, entitled tool who will happily starve a kid of lunch while taking an extra $52K per year tax free just because he can, right up until he can't because the public are furious. And even then he has absolutely no idea why they're furious. After all, he's entitled to it.

$50 .... don't forget the licence fee is just one component of the annual re-rego fee.

Motorbike fees are larger because of the larger ACC component.

Yes, I own a large bike, but I choose to do so.

I don't really have a problem with them hiking fines either to be honest. Since we are so fascinated with what life is like over the ditch, we should also remember that the maximum fine for speeding less than 10km/h over the limit is $2200 AU in NSW, though the last time my dad got a ticket for that range it was actually more like $350 (as opposed to the $30 it is here).

I agree that Key was mostly okay as a PM.

They really are trying to do everything in the early part of their term, probably on the hopes that in 18 - 24 months, when its time to start campaigning again, the public would have forgotten all the crap thats gone on at the start.

I remember car regos going down significantly not that many years ago, no issue with them going back up. In terms of car ownership, its a minor cost.

I don't have an issue with the increase in fines either, its one tax that its legal to avoid/evade.

Money for roads, right out of the national playbook, but in a country like ours with population spread etc, roads are what we have so if we can make them better / safer, its not a terrible thing.

I don't think Luxon will last the term, not sure who'll take over, but he is stumbling from one gaffe to another. It won't be long before the National board will want to step in and try for someone less tarnished.

The last Western Express changes were a disaster indeed. West Auckland deserves a busway too - actually, what they both need is light rail. Having gutted PT by another $550M pretty much guarantees that even the little the previous government managed to achieve won't be expanded.
