Linuxluver:

National have been two seats away from Opposition for years.

If all parties have to stand alone: -

labour are 30 seats away from govt, greens 47 seats ...

Sophistry. Labour and the Greens can work together.

National can't work across the board with anyone who gets significant voter support. They only have a majority thanks to the two zombie parties they have cynically rorted MMP with: United Future and ACT. The Royal Commission on the electoral system made it absolutely clear that voters want that rort ended....and National ignored it as they are well aware they would not be in government if vote shares were converted into seats....and they coudn't swap out National MPs in Ohariu-Belmont and Epsom for "fakes".

Oh boy. Didn't take long.

What would you have National do ? Should they concede by NOT involving the two smaller parties, and the Greens? They had a larger majority of votes! Is that what you would do ? Nope, didn't think so.

Prior to Key I'm not aware of the media focussing on a politician's immediate family in the way Key's kids have been focused on.

Prior to Key, the PM didn't have children, and prior to that politician's children didn't have the opportunity to present themselves in all their glory, to an unlimited global audience via twitter and facebook.

Stephie's artistic enterprises didn't get any more publicity than you'd expect if any senior politician's child posted images of themselves half-naked all over the internet.  I do tend to think that the media followed that up giving her the benefit of any doubt - that it was artistic expression rather than exhibitionism or an attempt to be famous for being famous.

Max however didn't come across very well.  At least his sister showed some possible talent rather than arrogant contempt for others.

Anyway - don't blame "the media" - blame the internet itself.

It would also be very naive to think that politicians don't use social media and the blogosphere to their own advantage, and sometimes very cynically indeed.

Is there any possibility of any hope at all that this will finally put an end to dinosaur Minister For Life useless self-serving system-rorting phony party leader Peter Dunne? I would so like to see the end of that drain on public resources.

I've been surprised by the number of people who have criticised Mr Key on a very ad hominem basis (not here particularly - in the world at large) and yet when you press them, the core of their argument is distilled into  jealousy over the fact that he has more money than they do.

I find this particular chip on the shoulder distasteful as well as stupid. A man who grew up in a single parent family, living in a state house and went on to succeed like Mr Key ought to be a serious role model not an object of jealousy and derision. Resenting the success of others as a way of distracting yourself from your own mediocrity is a bit sad, really.

I blame the media because they have become appalling and are seriously lacking any serious investigative journalism. Sure Max Key is to blame for a lot of his media hype, but why has the media picked it up and ran with it??

PonyGate was pathetic yet the media turned it into a major event...lots more examples....including Dotcom who got way to much media attention.

Mainstream media has become an arm of social media...

Key was a multimillionaire before he came to politics and he wanted to make a difference. He spent the best years of his life and his kids life working 100 hours a week in a job he did quite well at. I dont believe he entered politics for a power trip or personal gain. He raised the worlds image of New Zealand hugely and now he is bowing out. he is leaving NZ in a better place as a result of his stable leadership.

Lets stop politicing and just say thanks for a job well done. Same to Helen Clark...another great piece of public service.

I don't think he's objecting to Dunne being elected. He's objecting that Dunne - despite having about 1% support of the entire population - gets a ministerial post every time because National wants his parliamentary vote. Nobody else with 1% support gets a job.

Maybe it is the way he made his money. Being a currency speculator doesn't exactly contribute to the human condition.

People seem to think the common decency and manners do not apply to those in the public eye, similar to the belief that some how because this is the mystical internet common decency and manners also don't apply.

I think that's mainly been a beat-up by the alt:right, the old "you're just jealous of his/her success" one-liner response to criticism.

There were some "rich prick" comments, but they never got traction.

More valid and irrefutably accurate are criticisms of policy, where the main beneficiaries have been his social class.  Yet as evidenced by popular vote, that's what the public wants, apparently.  Of course now we're all property magnates by default, perhaps there's a perception that we are in his social class.  Unless you're a loser of course - which is your own fault.

Oh no it doesn't - not "speculation" which is gambling.

Currency instruments weren't dreamed up to enable speculation, but mainly to hedge against volatility in order to encourage trade by reducing risk.  Speculation increases volatility, and the overall effect of that is always negative.

In more simple terms, from speculation there's always a loser for every winner, but nothing tangible is produced by the transaction - it's just shuffling money around.
