So why would any leader trust the USA not to interfere?

I'm sure he doesn't.  He's stuck between a rock and a hard place.  China also interferes in a "pro-market" counter-revolutionary manner which threatened KJU's absolute rule (and probably his life). He's run out of friends - Trump's given him a life-line.  Not saying that's a bad thing, but KJU's gamble is possibly that he'll have full support of China if he can get the US out of South Korea, lose his nukes, but still be under China's nuclear umbrella.  He'll also probably get a gas/oil pipeline from Russia, extract royalties for shipments to South Korea, improve the NK economy if all goes well, but remain as dictator.

I see it differently. If KJU decided to fold when he took rule, he would get the usual food, oil and cash. All of which get eaten, burnt and spent.

Now he is trading in his nukes, he wont get this, but will get Japan and SK and China to rebuild his country, leaving him with a sustainable economy. A master move.

The US arent moving out. So its in China's interests to keep NK a seperate country under Kim rule. Kim Jong Un will have his cake and eat it too. On the international front he will involve himself, his people will love that.

Trump might be in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize - along with Kim I guess. While this would be premature it would be no worse than the Nobel committee giving it to Obama who had done nothing & did nothing to deserve it.

ROFL - that Nobel prize thing again.

Trump has some work to do - the prize is decided by Norwegians, not trolls on 4 Chan.

71 percent of Norwegians believed Donald Trump and the United States constituted a "real threat to world peace."

In a survey conducted by Ipsos for Dagbladet, 1002 Norwegians received questions from a number of world leaders.

"To what extent does President Donald Trump and the United States constitute a real threat to world peace?"

26 percent respond "to a very large extent" and 45 percent correspond "to a large extent."

Yes, but wouldn't it be great if it came about. Something good happening compared to what is happening in the Mediterranea Sea 'arc of despair' from Libya to Italy. Not to mention Ukraine.

Looks like the Trump thread has morphed into this thread.

In the Q+A he spelled out detail that was not oil the communique, i.e. removing all nukes. Thats the biggie. In the past there have been agreements, all failed. This time it may fail as well. But the bottom line is that disarmament is what he spelled out in the Q+A. Should that not occur, or take too long, then nothing will happen. We will be back too where were are today, the likelihood that the rhetoric will not continue. And likely that NK will pursue its own version of denuclearisation. Which what I have picked up, is keep talking, strict arm controls, keep the nukes. Once the US gets miffed, it may flex its muscles, with a few war games, then the world will come down on them (finally) Some can stand up and tell the US you are the biggest individual player, but not the biggest player (referring to the other like minded players combined

End result is peace, NK is nuclear, sanctions are off. NK wins, but there is peace. China happy

Remember the Iran deal took multiple meetings and as CNN just said, was 159 pages long. Very different scenario. There was background meetings with Pompeo and a 5 hour meeting, where the US or NK would not know how it will go, especially if Trump brought his bully mentality.

IMHO the ingredients are there. Trump has stated to the world and therefore NK afterwards, that disarmament will get under way very soon. Thats his out. You would expect that timeframes and detail will happen, and as the next military exercises are August, plenty of time to lock a few things down. The benefit, also enhanced with the G7 shenanigans, is that if and probably when, the US gets tough, NK and SK can seek other intermediaries to replace the US. Many many options. Plus as NK is now safe from regime change, and already was, NK has plenty of desire to move forward

I don't share your confidence.

KCNA has apparently announced (to their people) that sanctions are being removed, and that full denuclearisation of the peninsula is going to happen.

China has also stated that they want sanctions eased - now.

I believe it's a set up by KJU to get sanctions removed, and with Bolton involved, it's almost unthinkable that anything short of surrender by NK would be a satisfactory outcome.

That's only going to strengthen China:NK relations and resolve to get the US out of the region.

"We'll see".
