I find it amusing that a number of the fringe/"freedom" parties (particularly Gunn's one) think they're - somehow - going to get a massive amount of special votes and (potentially) win the election once all the counting is completed.

I have no doubt they will pick up some votes, for sure, but enough to win? Spare me.

They may get a higher percentage of the special votes, as a number of their supporters may be first time voters who weren't enrolled prior to the election. These sort of parties often pick up those who feel unconnected or disenfranchised from the normal parties and political process. It will not be enough to change the outcome.

I dunno, how many special votes did Advance NZ get in 2020? I guess that would be the guideline I would use.

The "fruit loops" were out by the Palmerston North fire station again today.

I wold have thought the fact that 99.94% of people did NOT vote for them may have given the free thinkers a moment where they could think and see how stupid they are.

I'm not sure why Peters is going for the conspiracy vote when the voting is over.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/nz-first-leader-winston-peters-claims-former-pm-jacinda-ardern-never-told-him-of-christchurch-terrorists-email-in-bizarre-post/JN5O6LTLOVDHFIDZSQKF2D67ZE/

Luxon told him to burn some bridges? Trolling Labour? Planning the next election already? ; )

https://www.newsroom.co.nz/national-must-deliver-on-policy-and-grow-party-vote-to-win-again

The sober reality is that no government – whether National or Labour-led – that has involved New Zealand First as either a coalition or confidence and support partner has survived beyond three years.

^ this is quite true.

Maybe so; all the more reason why Labour needs to have their come-to-Jesus moment sooner rather than later, and the new Green MPs get up to speed on how little-g government works so they can hit the ground running when Winston finally throws a pipe bomb into the Cabinet room.

I would've said this time round he might be on his best behaviour in order to keep out the woke but he's already having a public meltdown over the Christchurch attack inquiry and we haven't even got the final results of the election yet.

The show has not even begun !

Christopher Luxon and David Seymour not commenting on Winston Peters’ Christchurch terror attack tweets
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/christopher-luxon-and-david-seymour-not-commenting-on-winston-peters-christchurch-terror-attack-tweets/CHNB44TADJDPDG3P3RPC6BACZI/

The art of Coalition...

Well NZ first did not survive coalition, (Though partner may ),
and there is the problem for all minor parties.

You can only get a deal to deliver in proportion to your leverage.
Many who vote for you don't understand progress to a goal, considering not getting everything a failure.

So they switch around next time, and another minor or major party gets those votes.
Until rinse and repeat.

One can look at Māori Party is a similar vein. Voters expectations may be far beyond what can be achieved.
Its not to say that the independent voice would not have power and capability to contribute greatly.

Greens have also seen a bit of this kind of thing, in discontent of progress vs getting everything by lunchtime.
Idealists in particular can be very suspectable to idea of lets just give up.

I daresay an ACT watcher can point to having its vote at times eaten by its partner. Vice versa also.

Its why a 3rd party 'non-partisan' discontent campaigns can be very effective in getting certain parties elected.
Following money in this campaign may be so easy as there was so much of it.

https://www.newsroom.co.nz/winston-peters-flexes-his-muscles-in-a-quiet-week >> Winston managed to achieve a few things this week, despite not even being in government (yet). He's starting to remind me of Trump, with his conspiracy theories and saying flat-out wrong things, all in the name of getting attention. Depressing. Luxon is dreaming if he thinks he'll be able to contain him and his nonsense.

When the final results are released, do they do a preliminary total beforehand, or is it all released in one go?

As I recall it's the result in full.

As in past elections if any electorate win still looks like a slim margin of only a few votes at that point there is the possibility of a loser requesting a recount to be sure.

https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/26-10-2023/how-the-fringe-right-responded-to-a-fierce-slapping-of-an-election >> The Spinoff looks at all the fringe parties this election and how many of that may be part of Winston's lot that make it into Parliament. Having said that, I do enjoy watching all the so-called "Freedom" groups turn against each other in their quest to be the victor:

That disharmony has persisted through to the election aftermath; you can hardly scroll a “freedom movement” Facebook group without encountering someone accusing one or other of the political wannabes of being part of a devilish Freemasons plot. Little wonder: October 14 was not the night of triumph that some had forecast. The best performing fringe right party, Liz Gunn’s New Zealand Loyal, returned just over 1% of the nationwide vote, according to the preliminary results, but none of the others came close to that.

Maybe Gunn had activated her "serious newsreader face" for that "MOAR" thing - which turned out to be absolutely nothing concrete...or of value 🙄

We should know the shape of the new government by Friday, right?

Friday is the final official election result. This includes a full recount of all the votes already counted on the day. Not sure what recourse candidates have to contest it in the event of a small winning margin - probably not a lot as that is the legal deadline for the GG to announce the new parliament.

Presumably the same recourse.
