freitasm: Roger Stone arrested.

Only the best people...

If Trump had really wanted to lock Hillary up, he should have just given her a job on his campaign team.

STUDY: MOST INNOCENT PEOPLE NEED TO HIRE THIRTY-FIVE LAWYERS AT SOME POINT

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Most people who are innocent of any crimes will still need to hire thirty-five lawyers at some point, a new study shows.

According to the study, commissioned by the University of Minnesota Law School, thirty-five is the “bare minimum” number of lawyers that an innocent person should have on retainer in the event that he or she becomes the subject of an entirely unjustified criminal investigation.

“We found that many innocent people are going through life without taking the basic precaution of hiring thirty-five lawyers,” Professor Davis Logsdon, who supervised the study, said. “They are flirting with disaster.”

“An innocent person who has absolutely nothing to hide should do everything in his or her power to avoid answering questions from investigators,” he said. “Thirty-five lawyers can really help you do that.”

Additionally, Logsdon noted, hiring nearly three dozen lawyers is invaluable because of the powerful statement it makes. “Nothing says ‘I’m innocent’ like hiring thirty-five lawyers,” he said.

Although some innocent people may balk at the unwieldy number of lawyers that the study recommends, Logsdon emphasized that thirty-five lawyers provide necessary protection against unforeseen legal complications. “If, for example, one of your lawyers goes to prison, you will still have thirty-four,” he said.

Logsdon acknowledged that, although every innocent person should definitely hire thirty-five lawyers, such legal help does not come cheap. “Legal bills for thirty-five lawyers can be very expensive, unless you’re a person who doesn’t pay his bills,” he said.

The state of the Union address will clearly happen, but its not planned yet Pelosi said. She said when there is an agreed date she will invite the address, emphasising when we agree. We is GOP and Democrats. Just a small reminder that "we" run the show now over many areas of governance. This won't be the last time Trump doesn't get what he wants

The Guardian - Trump raises white flag as shutdown gambit fails gradually then suddenly

Caught between the political savvy of Nancy Pelosi and the wrath of Ann Coulter the president secured not a penny for his wall.

A white flag was metaphorically waved by Donald Trump in a chilly yet sunny Rose Garden on Friday when he declared an end to the partial government shutdown after 35 tortuous days.

So why cave now? There are three likely reasons.

First, there was the political pressure. Asked how he went bankrupt, a character in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises answers: “Gradually and then suddenly.” The bad news built gradually over Christmas and the new year, then suddenly on Friday as a shortage of air traffic controllers caused significant flight delays and I-regret-voting-for-Trump interviews reached a crescendo.

Second, if Trump was going to cut his losses, he might as well do it now in the hope that he can deliver his State of the Union address as planned on Tuesday, or at least soon after. It is the sort of big televised moment that he no doubt fantasised about when he first ran for president. The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, told him it would be postponed until the government reopened. Friday’s surrender marked Pelosi 2, Trump 0.

Third, Trump is a master of distraction and throwing out shiny objects to divert attention. The day began with the potentially catastrophic arrest of his longtime adviser Roger Stone as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged collusion with Russia. How better to knock Stone out of the headlines than by ending the longest government shutdown in American history.

The reality, however, is that Trump has exchanged one set of awful headlines for another.

Already the narrative is that the self-proclaimed dealmaker capitulated, caved, gave in, surrendered and lost. He tried to dodge that perception by loading his Rose Garden speech with the usual graphic and gory claims about of drugs and violent criminals pouring over the US-Mexico border. ...

The Washington Post - Trump signs bill to open the government, ending the longest shutdown in history

January 25 at 8:22 PM

President Trump on Friday agreed to temporarily reopen the federal government without getting any new money for his U.S.-Mexico border wall, retreating from the central promise of his presidency, for now, in the face of intense public anger.

The president’s humbling concession to the new realities of divided government brought the nation’s longest government shutdown to an end on its 35th day.

It was a major victory for Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who took charge of a new House Democratic majority just three weeks ago and kept her large caucus unified throughout the standoff.

“Our diversity is our strength,” Pelosi told reporters after the agreement was reached. “But our unity is our power. And that is what maybe the president underestimated.”

Trump announced the deal in an early afternoon speech in the Rose Garden.

EDIT:

By evening the Senate, and then the House, had passed the plan by voice vote, and both chambers adjourned.

Trump himself signed the plan into law later Friday night ...

F.B.I. TO SPECIAL-ORDER A PAIR OF TINY HANDCUFFS

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—The Federal Bureau of Investigation is special-ordering a pair of “tiny handcuffs,” an F.B.I. spokesman confirmed on Wednesday.

The spokesman, Harland Dorrinson, downplayed the significance of the handcuff purchase, calling it “strictly routine.”

“In reviewing our inventory of handcuffs, we found that we only had models that fit normal-sized hands,” Dorrinson said. “This order is intended to remedy that.”

The F.B.I. spokesperson said that, if regulation-sized handcuffs were used on a suspect with “extremely small or tiny hands,” the suspect could slip out of them and elude capture.

The New York Times - For the President Consumed With Winning, a Stinging Defeat

Jan. 25, 2019 (short extracts)

WASHINGTON — President Trump famously declared that in his administration the nation would become tired of all the winning. So on Friday he tried a little losing. ...

The president scheduled an announcement, and the scene in the Rose Garden was surreal.

Cabinet officers and White House aides lined up and applauded when the president emerged from the Oval Office as if he were declaring victory in his confrontation with Democrats in Congress.

And the president sounded as if he was doing just that, opening his remarks by saying that he was “very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown.”

Only there was no deal, just a retreat.

The president who said he would never reopen the government unless he secured money for his border wall agreed to reopen the government without money for his border wall. ...

The New York Times - Trump Repeats Unfounded Arguments in New Appeal for a Border Wall

[this is relevant to my previous Post post]

Even as he agreed to reopen the government, the president used recycled inaccurate claims to press his case for a wall.

  • Mr. Trump continued to inflate figures about crime and drugs.
  • He exaggerated the numbers of border crossers and cited unverified tales of human trafficking.
  • He claimed public approval of the shutdown and the wall, despite evidence to the contrary.
  • And about that evolving wall …

On Friday, the president said, “We do not need 2,000 miles of concrete wall from sea to shining sea - we never did.”
He added that he had never proposed such a thing.  undecided

Fantastic episode of "Real Time with Bill Maher."

Thanks to dumb luck, the guests had a lot to say about all of Trump's recent woes.

May I offer this tip:
1) go to Youtube,
2) search for "bill maher real",
3) press the "FILTER" button, on left
4) Upload date: "this week"
5) Duration:"long (> 20 minutes)"

and when you've watched that
6) search for "real time overtime"
