At his second term Obama was about 10 points behind by a fair number of polls, in the popular vote, and STORMED in with electoral votes. 


Agree, and in Obama's case he won the popular vote also. Wikipedia shows Obama in 2008 with 52.92% of the popular vote, and again in 2012 with 50.95℅ of the popular vote.

Needless to say, Trump will be hoping for a similar effect motivating non-voters to the polls and those not captured in telephone opinion surveys.

Watched some of it last night. Clinton clearly won, but she also did a bit of avoidance. So many blind statements by Trump, now if he had any credibility you could take some grain of truth in what he says, but that's gone. He is gone burger, the interesting thing to see of what % of the vote he gets, which will fall back on what the world thinks about American people if he gets a solid vote count

Nevertheless, the question is still valid. The US is already something like $14 TRILLION in debt and running a deficit. A further shortfall - even a small one - isn't going to make things better unless you believe in trickle-down-economics. But in practice it should be obvious that only one thing trickles down from the rich in any significant volume, and it is warm, wet and yellow in colour.

He has to be one of the worst people I have ever come across. He disgusts me in every way possible yet the Americans are lapping it up. Fox News has also totally collapsed in any credibility ratings it had (imo)....how can such a huge media organisation continue to support and bolster Trump and survive?

 

Whilst newspapers in the US, namely Washington Post and NY Times are clearly siding against Trump, Fox News staffers such as Hannity and O'Reilly continue to vigorously defend and support Trump despite all his massive lies and racist and sexist comments.

 

Maybe an exaggeration, but isnt this getting a bit like fascism, where people will follow a person no matter what?

 

This could be a bad dream and I will wake up soon and sigh a huge relief!!

I've come across far worse - could write a long list of thoroughly deplorable human beings who've actually ascended to political power on the back of popular support over the past half century or so.
I'm not so sure that "the Americans" are lapping it up - some are for sure, but many (including a lot of conservatives/republicans) are absolutely mortified by the thought of what a Trump presidency could do to the US.

Having had some time to reflect, I agree with those who say Hillary won, though I think it would be more correct to say Trump lost again. She was at her strongest (least weak) during the first half, when he was wandering all over the place and avoiding responding to any question by repeatedly dishing up his memorised lines about all the things Hillary and Obama had done wrong, even when they had nothing whatsoever to do with what was supposed to be the topic of discussion. It was a bizarre and pathetic performance. 

 

He got better (less awful) as time wore on, and she got worse. In the second half it almost seemed like she was having trouble maintaining her train of thought. Her manner was sometimes hesitant and stilted, as if she couldn’t remember where she was going with a sentence, and had forgotten what she meant to say. She didn’t get lost completely, but a few times it looked like she might as she struggled for words. 

 

Regardless of who gets elected, I am just glad I don’t live there anymore. 

 

So who wants to help me build a wall?
