Yes, it might be like that. It may also be, as this is the first meeting, a bit delicate given the insults both ways, lets just have a simple chat on what we agree on. Thats easy and its quick, and it becomes an icebreaker, which may soften what they disagree on in later talks

The sky does not fall if it takes a while longer to form a Government.

I daresay everything ticks along just the same when Parliament goes on long holiday recesses too :-)
We have had longer delays before and then in EU its not unusual, Germany did push this out a bit.

Apart from us noticing that day to day it makes little difference if Parliament is there or not for a while.
This is only a panic to MPs :-)

Now if you have a Government that regularly revolts against its Prime Minister.
All that backstabbing within ruling party that really stirs everyone up.
But still day to day stuff just ticks along.

Still maybe it adds to arguments to go for a 4 year term.

It'll get done when it gets done.

The downside of the Luxon media blackout strategy is there is nothing to actually report so the media is reporting every minor rumour. If there's no actual news they'll find something to get the clicks.

It's really not the end of the world if it takes another week or two to get done.

And central government agencies are very much planning for around an 8% haircut across the board. It’s my view most things will grind to a halt. There will be the 100 day plan and the main or only tangible change will be a significant reduction in headcount and all contractors are cut.

It will be a self fulfilling prophecy of government agencies failing to deliver after having massive redundancies to pay for a $10 tax cut due to the competent people leaving and moral being in the toilet.

I reckon, Luxon (to me, anyway) gives the impression this will all be a walk in the park for him, as he's managed teams and used to run an airline.

But giving a stewardess feedback on how she (or he) is doing their job is totally different to telling Winston Peters what to do.

Speaking of Winston - Stuff took a look at his 1996 coalition agreement with Jim Bolger. Very different back then to what he's touting he'll do today:

I sincerely doubt the new government will be any better or any worse than the many others I've lived under.

The majority of views I see posted on here just seem to reflect the posters political leanings so really not very objective.

Political leanings aside, @SJB is probably right. And I consider that a systemic failing. New Zealand isn't an FPP country, so it evades the two-party system - mostly. But let's be honest, it's a two-party system. Because ultimately, every MMP coalition involves "one of the two". Wake me up when Greens or an alternate link in.

Arguably that’s begun to change. It’s a three way government this time round (assuming one or the other of ACT or NZF don’t throw a tantrum and sit on the cross benches. If hypothetically NZF and Labour had been willing to deal, it would be four. Hopefully this trend continues.

NZF and ACT have inherited a lot of Anti's that decided that getting closer to power was better than an unrecognized protest vote.

Hence they have a lot more in common once you put the 'personal' issues aside.

National will want to get on with its core business and economic policies that it got huge donations for.

NZF and ACT have potential to gang up on National to buy a race policy fight that's going to be very ugly.
Its also something that you don't have to bring to a head.
Thus unnecessarily taking attention away from core policies while there is a bitter fight over this.

This is the sort of unproductive divisive stuff John Key would kick down the road.

I'm figuring its not NZF that will be a sticking point, but a joint NZF ACT block seeing opportunity ?
