Compare this to the Greens Co-Leader in Australia who found out she had Accidentally been a citizen of two countries (She moved to Australia when she was 11 months old) and despite it being a stupid unintentional mistake, resigned immediately and may have to pay back $500K+ of salary.

The same mistake claimed both Greens Co-Leaders.

She did one thing right in admitting what she had done, she now needs to do the next right thing and stand down. She could stay in the party if the want her and stand in the 2020 election as a electorate candidate and allow the voters to decide if she should be in Parliament. I don't think it would be right to stand as a list candidate in the 2017 election.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I stand by my comment. A lot of people seem to have such a blind hatred of the Greens that they can't possibly conceive that anything good can come from them. It is not their policies, or their ideas, or their convictions, just the mere fact that the 'Green' label has been slapped on them. There is a real, arrogant, irrational, sneering dismissal of Green politics and the Green party by some on the right. This has no basis in any kind of fact, other than the fact that it comes from the Greens. With this kind of attitude, there is no possibility for rational discussion or debate.

I have stated many times that I am not a Green supporter. I like their principles, but not some of their policies. I do think they have some worthwhile ideas, just as the National party and others have some good ideas. I actually hate this whole stupid left-right divide and the entire adversarial system that underlies it. There are good ideas and silly ones at both ends of the political spectrum and I don't see why we can't all just work together in the best interests of everyone.

All the rabid Greens haters are predictably jumping on what Metiria Turei said while completely ignoring why she said it. Rightly or wrongly, she was using her experience to try to make a serious point that is worthy of serious attention. What she did and what happens to her as a result are completely separate matters. They will be dealt with appropriately in due course. All the frothing at the mouth by the morally indignant is unnecessary and unhelpful. It is cheap point-scoring, nothing more.

I dislike lying, dishonest, fraudulent, stealing politicians. Especially those that admit to stealing taxpayer money, stealing from all New Zealanders, rich and poor that pay tax.

The election results will tell, I'm predicting under 10% for the greens in 2017.

I don't think we are reading the same thread! I see the vast majority of people who say the Greens have a place in NZ Politics, and a common theme as to why they don't want them having too much power in Government, suggesting they should be there for the purpose of providing some balance to Nationals less Green focus.

I don't think what she did and what she said, and why she said it are separate matters, and I don't think for a second you'd have such an "understanding" viewpoint of other parties.

I don't consider anyone else frothing at the mouth to be any less significant than your own in defence of your own views.

I agree, Kiwis are forgiving on many things but welfare or tax abuse is something else. I think the Greens will be judged hard in the next election with a chunk of their vote going probably to Labour.

Don't know about the Australia guy, but usually a politician's move is dictate by media pressure at least in this country and I know also in Britain.

The Todd guy, the media was after his jugular and he stepped down within 24 hrs thanks to the media attack from any angle imaginable.

Media vs the Green leader? Umm ... zilch?

In NZ politics, the king makers are 1. media 2. media 3. media

I don't really care for Winston Peters but I have to give it to him, he is a seasoned campaigner and a very shrewd politician, he doesn't always pick the right windmill to tilt at but he sure knows how to get headlines.

Yeah Right, Tui. Like Bill English did after his house-rental rort was exposed. Like Todd Barclay did after his illegal recording. Like Bill English did after lying to the House about Todd Barclay's recording. Judith Collins conflict of interest? Maurice Williamson and his National Party donor? NZ First's Tracey Martin double-dipping MP?

When was the last time an MP stepped down after being caught doing something illegal? Let alone admitting they did it *before* getting caught?
