Impeachment is a high risk strategy for the Dems. They won't get him impeached, regardless of what he has done, and he can rattle on about harassment etc.

I still come back to the fact the Dems need a clear and convincing front runner (it's not Biden surely) and some appealing policies or Donny is in for another 4 years and this thread will get to 2000 pages not just 1000. They shouldn't be wasting their time on this.

Once they are in power they can go after him and his whole rotten family on tax, corruption etc in the private sector. Much easier sell to the country I would have thought.

Would Pence necessarily be The Man? Or could the GOP fit up someone else?

Yes, the constitution clearly lays out the line of succession. VP->Speaker of the House->President pro temp senate-> Sec State -> then down through the cabinet.

The only reason Pence wouldn't become president is if something happened to make him unable to fulfill the role.

Fred99: Trump is reelected, then a worse monster than the one the world has now will have been created.

If Trump is re-elected and dies from choking on a KFC chicken leg, then a different nightmare is possible.

The snake slinking in the toilet, Vice President Pence

DarthKermit:

If Donny goes and Pence takes his place I shouldn't wonder if he'll pardon Trump for all his crimes the way Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon. One hand washes the other.

A"pardon" implies mutual acceptance of guilt.

In Trump's case, there are also many looming prosecutions by states for stuff he did prior to being elected for which he can't be pardoned, can't or won't be prosecuted while he's POTUS, and if he's impeached or loses in 2020 he can't get off because of statute of limitations - as he no doubt hopes if he wins in 2020.

So it's more than just megalomania driving him, the chance of him resigning as Nixon did is close to zero.

All the president’s loyalists: Impeachment net snares Trump’s top advisers

The president’s senior aides are about to face the punishing spotlight of an impeachment inquiry, the beginning of personal and professional costs spreading throughout Trump's orbit.

Politico, By Darren Samuelshohn

Donald Trump has done it again: He’s dragged some of his closest aides and advisers into a scandal packed with potentially devastating personal consequences.

That’s good news for white-collar lawyers who charge by the hour.

But an investigation into allegations that Trump pressured his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate Joe Biden and his son is hardly the kind of thing to be embraced by those orbiting Trumpworld, including Vice President Mike Pence; some of the most important aides, such as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Attorney General William Barr and acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney; and his own personal attorney at the center of it all, Rudy Giuliani.

They all face a long road ahead with the prospect of hefty legal bills, reputational scars and damaged political prospects hanging over them for years.

It isn’t a new phenomenon. Michael Cohen, Paul Manafort, Rick Gates and Michael Flynn all can attest to what happens when their own conduct gets scrutinized over the course of a high-level investigation that started because of Trump.

  • attorney genera William Barr

  • secretary of State Mike Pompeo

  • chief of staff Mick Mulvaney

DarthKermit:  If Donny goes and Pence takes his place...

Wow. What a scenario for a brilliant TV series. Think about it: Pence starts off with a soul full of hope and righteousness and then....

The possibilities are endless. Frig, I hope someone is working on this. House of Cards with God a guest in the Lincoln Room, and Trump's shade haunting the halls. Love it!

The Washington Post - Whistleblower painstakingly gathered material and almost single-handedly set impeachment in motion

September 26 at 8:32 PM

The whistleblower’s identity remains obscured, the details of his work for the CIA cloaked in secrecy.

But the document he delivered reveals almost as much about the investigative mission he carried out in stealth as it does about the alleged abuses of power by the president.

From the moment he learned about President Trump’s attempts to extract political dirt on former vice president Joe Biden from the newly elected leader of Ukraine on July 25, the CIA officer behind the whistleblower report moved swiftly behind the scenes to assemble material from at least a half-dozen highly placed - and equally dismayed - U.S. officials.

He wove their accounts with other painstakingly gathered material on everything from the intervention of Trump’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani in the U.S.-Ukraine relationship to alleged efforts by American diplomats sent to Kiev and attorneys in the Office of the White House Counsel to contain or suppress the accruing damage.

On Aug. 12, he delivered his document - a nine-page version of which was made public on Thursday - to the intelligence community’s inspector general, triggering an almost immediate clash between the executive branch and Congress.

Six weeks later, the whistleblower has by some measures managed to exceed what former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III accomplished in two years of investigating Trump: producing a file so concerning and factually sound that it has almost single-handedly set in motion the gears of impeachment. ...

The Washington Post - The process of impeachment is now inevitable

(extracts)

September 26 at 2:47 PM

For the first time in American history, the president has pleaded guilty to an impeachable offense.

This is effectively what happened when the White House released the readout from President Trump’s July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. ...

Note that Trump’s call with Zelensky came during the denouement of the investigation of Russian influence.

According to the readout, Trump said: “As you saw yesterday, that whole nonsense ended with a very poor performance by a man named Robert Mueller.

Consider this a moment.

Trump gloated about beating the charge that he conspired with a foreign government to win an election, during a call in which he proposed to conspire with a foreign government to win reelection.

The man is immune to ethical instruction.

And further, Trump thought that releasing the readout of the call would somehow be exculpatory.

He has spent so many years in the trash heap of corruption that he can no longer recognize the stench. ...

There's another whistleblower  too:

While President Donald Trump currently has his hands–and the Department of Justice–full with allegations of impropriety vis-à-vis the Ukraine-phone-call-whistleblower-complaint-cover-up scandal, there is reportedly another whistleblower and concomitant complaint waiting for the 45th president in the wing.

A little-noticed court filing from August contains a shocking allegation made by a disgruntled Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employee: that President Trump attempted to interfere with some aspect of the agency’s mandatory presidential audit system.

I would say the first thing the next president should do is demand a full audit of all of Trumps finances. He has clearly shown the level of corruption, lies and misdirection he is willing to use for his own personal benefit.

These are the main players and events described in the whistleblower complaint that ultimately led to the start of an impeachment investigation:

The Washington Post - A quick guide to Trump’s false claims about Ukraine and the Bidens

September 27

This is one of those complex stories that consume Washington but frequently confuse ordinary Americans.

Trump appears to be counting on that confusion to offer a fog of claims and allegations to make it appear as if Biden had done something wrong.

So here’s a quick guide to Trump’s statements:

[topic headings only]

  • False: Biden pushed out a Ukrainian prosecutor investigating his son
  • False: Hunter Biden made a killing on a China deal
  • False: Biden lied about talking to his son
  • False: Democratic senators also threatened Ukraine’s aid
