This is how the alt-right works, and regrettably we also have these despicable creeps in New Zealand. Regardless of your politics, every person who cares about things like justice and basic decency should be incensed by this kind of personal attack. Threats of death and rape to anyone have no place in our society and I hope the police can find these miserable cowardly reptiles and throw the book at them. This is the kind of snake the alt-right draws out and appeals to. Everyone should denounce this disgusting behaviour. Thugs like this need to be named and shamed and hung out to dry.

Coincidentally, one of our own intolerant scumbags is being returned from Aus:

"Baptist Pastor?"  FFS.

How about the time Jacinda Arden tweeted about how much she liked the band Home Brew? You know, this Home Brew:

"The singer behind the controversial Kill the PM song swore and joked about raping John Key's son before walking out of a live radio interview.

Former Home Brew singer Tom Scott was yesterday on Kim Hill's Playing Favouritessegment of her Radio NZ show, where guests choose some of their favourite songs.

But things soured when Hill asked about the song Scott released with his band @ peace during the election campaign, in which he sang about killing PM Key and having sex with his daughter, Stephanie.

Asked about the the lyrics, Scott said: "I mean obviously I regret what I said. I probably should have said I was going to rape his son."

When asked if he had any regrets, he said: "I don't regret what I said actually. Screw that."

Is this the Alt-right too?

Are you purposely misleading with this?

Jacinda Ardern said she liked the Home Brew band during the New Zealand Music Awards in 2012.

Tom Scott gave this interview while in a different band, two years later.

So unless you can find the PM making this comment directly related to the other band your comment is trolling.

I wanted to follow this up - my point is ascribing this behaviour purely to a right (extreme right, but still right) wing movement in isolation is basically legitimising this sort of thing when people who aren't them do it. The reality is people all over the spectrum have been doing this down here for years before the Alt-right was even a thing. Let's not paper over those experiences because some a group of easily-labeled dickheads are still doing it today.

No. I'm not trolling (not intentionallya anyway). I'm pointing out that this sort of behaviour is a) not new and b) not exclusive to one side. You can find countless examples of this happening in NZ before the 'Alt-right' rise in the US; a classic example is the anti-1080 crusaders who have been vandalising cars and helicopters in NZ. Are they alt-right?

I am happy for my original post to be deleted as I feel this one makes the point more effectively: We've always had fringe lunatics. But let's call it what it is instead of just pretending one minute portion of one side the political compass indulges in it.

On this topic, there are already lots of local alt-right groups. There's one that put posters around Wellington, meets in public at a central pub and are vocal about restoring rights to white people.

An immediate ban, no-warning is in place for anyone that posts a link to such organisations. Be aware of this when discussing local movements.

Your point should be about the singer, not about the Prime Minister then.

It is disgusting, regardless of what label you put on it. I can't speak for Jacinda Ardern but this is just deflecting from the real issue.

The alt-right spews racist hate - targeting entire groups of people for something they are not something they chose to be. There's no place for this kind of attitude in a modern society where everyone's rights are respected.

Inciting violence on the basis of religion or skin colour is hate speech and should not be accepted.

To keep things on track - I think the way this has been applied by the Council is an interesting approach. For instance, there may well be games at Eden Park this year that Israel Folau is selected for. His outburst of hate-speech is far more locally relevant, and I would argue, harmful, than Youtube celebrities. Could Israel Folau be banned from Eden Park as an RFA/Council facility? Can roads like Queen Street be used for people like Brian Tamaki to spread his particular brand of bile?

Or worse. Now I think you really are trolling. This kind of hair-splitting is a classic deflection technique. I was talking here about actual threatening to rape or murder someone. That is very different from the examples you cite, unpleasant as those are.

If people are confused about hate speech laws and censorship vs "freedom of speech", they should read about "the paradox of tolerance".

In relation to this they might also want to consider the apparent growing division in US society, how that might be linked to First Amendment rights to freedom of speech, methods of Russian interference in US politics, and a resultant shift in US global and domestic politics toward "tolerance of intolerance" - and where that might lead the world.

I have seen enough reports worldwide to know that this is not restricted to the right hand side of the political spectrum.

I was going to add an edit to what I said above - but was too late:

I probably stand accused by some of hyperbolic statements in my assessment of what's going on in the US - but I'm not likely to change my opinion any time soon.  On reflection since I posted the above, it's actually worse than a shift toward "tolerance of intolerance", there's actually growing "intolerance of tolerance", as evidenced by extremely widespread verbal attacks on "liberals", media etc.
