what are you trying to do exactly? kinda hard to give you options or opinions if we dont know what you are trying to achieve

i have a US bank account, but im not a resident, but i do have a social security number as it was required when i was working there for 4 months. i was working in the US but still for my NZ employer.

I don't think you can open an account with a US bank if you're not there. You can open a USD account in NZ, or you can accept Paypal. Personally I use PayPay, easy and so far for me it's been reliable for years. I wouldn't keep a large balance in there though.
