DarkShadow: Got it last week. OpenELEC kinds of works, it's kind of laggy though. Will try Raspbmc and see how it goes.

Let us know how it goes. RaspMC looks interesting.

Just out of interest what are people planning to do with their Raspberry Pi?

I have seen some comments about people using it as a media player hooked up to a server or other PC, others are talking about using them to learn programming and I think this is inline with the original intention of the makers.

Just curious really.

I've got a couple of ideas in the pipeline. One is along the media centre track (the objective of this thread) and I've got some home-automation experiments to do which may or may not become a real-life solution.
Beyond that, some interfacing with Arduino and Lego NXT.
In the end, just another toy really.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Better specs and only a slightly bigger price tag, will be interesting how it handles video playback.

i dont see that as a raspberrypi competitor.

the whole cool thing about a raspberrypi is the size and power.

personally i want to mount this to the back of my tv, power it through the tvs usb source (not sure if this is doable with the pi, but heres hoping), and never see it.

i do not want a device that needs a big power brick/dc adapter or a mini itx case. mini pc case have never really been mini....

So I installed Raspbmc.
It plays youtube fine.
It plays sd xvid videos and hd h264 files fine.
Fastforward/rewind is a bit slow
Menus have animations and are fast, but if you are playing a video at the same time then the menu overlay on top is slow.
But the initial loading of a video is slow, and the loading of youtube content is very slow (I think it is a xbmc problem because it is the same on windows.)

It hung quite a few times though. Has promise, waiting for the next version.

i dont suppose you have xbmcpvr you could try out with live tv feeds?

im wanting to use these as xbmcpvr frontends, and hoping the HD tv feeds can be played on these (theyre sort of a funny format)

The VIA board doesn't have the input /output pins of the R-Pi, it's just a plane old fashion single-board computer (SBC). The R-Pi can be used as the heart of embed projects.

Does it output Digital audio?
All my MKV files are DTS/DD/AC3 and currently my WDTVLIVE outputs over optical to my Home Theatre - works brilliantly.
What are the audio outputs like on the RPi? Would it output the audio over HDMI?

I just watched a couple of videos on my raspberry pi using raspbmc, but with mkv files, audio is not working. i've checked all my settings (audio over hdmi etc) and still can't get it to work. raspbmc is very good quality for a beta, very responsive.

now that is interesting. if they can port xbmc on it, ill buy one and give it a go.

basically the ideal is a device you can strap to the back of your tv, power it via your tv, ethernet network, and capable of running 1080p movies/live tv feeds.

anything bigger than that and im not interested.

floydbloke: Just got an email too, mine will be dispatched week beginning 28 May. I ordered on launch day (29 Feb) at about 21:40.

This is encouraging. I just checked my order on the Element14 site and the status has changed to 'Completed'. Although there is no shipping/tracking information and I haven't received any email notifications. So I guess my Pi is now in transit to me somewhere in the world.

yeah my order is now "complete" on element14, though ive never received any further emails from them other than my registration for their website and my initial order.

nothing in spam folder either.

hopefully it arrives soon :)
