sawyersbay: I've been wondering whether I will be able to access MySky HD's 5.1 surround sound. I don't have HDMI switching on my Marantz SR5200 receiver, so will take the video via HDMI straight to my plasma. Will I be able to use a separate digital cable to get MySky audio to my receiver eg, using an optical connection?

That's a point - currently we have normal sky digital - that we can either watch sky through a normal channel on the tv - ie 5 or via AV channel with the Sky going through my DVD Home Theartre - does the MySky boxes allow for this?

As I love watching Sky with Better sound through my DVD Home theatre system as if I turn the volume up too much on the TV it has an annoying vibrating sound.

JonathanBarrett: The options re MySky are very confusing. Here is my understanding based on a call to their sales team:- If you want to get MySky you can pay a one-off fee of $599 and you then just pay your normal monthly subscription as before. MySky will be installed within 2 weeks. Easy. Alternatively, you can go for the new hi-definition option. This will not be installed until August or September. However, with this option you can pay a monthly rental of $15 for the box rather than the $599 up-front fee. You will also have to pay $10 per month for the hi-def channels but you do not have to take these. Therefore, comparing the two, you would say that after about 3.3 years of paying the $15 pm rental, you would have been better off paying the $599 as there are no further payments to make. However!! Supposing you will eventually upgrade to hi-definition but you decide to pay the $599 now to get MySky installed quicker. When you go to hi-def you will be paying $15pm rental which you could have just paid from day 1, thus avoiding the $599 fee! So really the only benefits of the $599 option are:- 1) Installation now rather than in Aug/Sept2) No rental fees, **assuming** you never want to upgrade to hi-def Comments, anyone?

As far as I know from what I've read. If you are a Mysky1 user, you can upgrade to Mysky 2 for $49.99 or something like that.

We are still umming and erring over which box to get. Due to the way things are wired - I have sky digital feed from same decoder going to my bedroom. But this can't be done on Mysky2 - unless you get mulitroom.

But I am a little confused also, as we also have the old UHF sky aerial - so I don't know if that can still be utlised to bring the picture to another TV if we get MySky2.

Also, I have a query from your communication with Sky - did they say that $15 a month rental/payment option stop after the $599 is paid off - as I've heard conflicting stories that this is ongoing.

I have observed from the phone logs that MySky phones home every so often, usually in the wee small hours of the morning. I don't know what purpose this serves, but I can tell you that MySky still works perfectly well without any phone line connected

It checks for PPV purchases. All Sky boxes do it once a month.

Sorry, it can't because there is no RF Output on MySky2. However, it is possible to buy an RF Modulator to get around this, as various people pointed out earlier. The picture quality will be pretty awful, but it does have the benefit that audio and video are carried on the same cable.

hehe yeah, I think that will probably just confuse him more as he isn't a tv techy person.

kiwipearls, the RF cable is the big round one that used to be use to connect TVs with rabbits ear aeriels and between old TVs and old VCRs. Where you used to be able to pass these signals through some boxes, the new HDi box doesn't have the plugs so you won't be able to send a signal to your downstairs TV through that cable like you currently are. And unfortunately the new methods of transfering audio/video require more than one cable (I'm ignoring HDMI as I doubt you'll have that) and the signal degrades quickly over longer runs. You could try running composite video down there through one cable and audio through one or two more, but you would probably need some decent quality cable (and I don't mean name brand like that monster rubbish, just thick with decent plugs) to keep the picutre quality. And that of course would require your TV to take a composite signal (the yellow in the yellow/red/white combo).

I know that the current MySky can output both a component signal and a composite signal at the same time, but I don't know about the new HDi boxes.

You could still use your old RF (coaxial) cable by using an RF modulator such as this from Jaycar with the composite feed from Mysky HDi.

As analog TV over RF is PAL (ie composite) all these modulators only accept composite, as that is what is modulated on the RF carrier, so there is no benifit in using anything better. Thats just how analog RF TV transmissions are.

Audio looks to be mono, so either he could set the HDi to mono audio output (if it has the option, assuming it does) which may affect the output on his main TV (unless he's using an optical output which should bypass the audio processing on the HDi box, not sure about HDMI), or he can get a 2xrca to 1xrca adapter from Dick Smiths (or similar) and combine the stereo feeds into one.

I have tried a couple of remote control extenders (one im currently using is the Jaycar product - AR1810). Both products I tried (cant remember the name of the other one) are patchy, but the Jaycar one IMHO is slightly better. However while sometimes it works perfectly, the next day might be the complete opposite.

Thanks for the advice on the Jaycar extender. I bought one today (it was out of stock when I originally went in last week), and set it up in about two minutes, and it works 100 times better than the DSE one manufactured by Hills. The Jaycar one has the benefit of having two IR transmitter points, so I can set it up in front of two different devices.

The Jaycar IR Extender has also the advantage of being half the price of the DSE IR Extender.

hey im really interested in getting mysky hd
dont currently have any sky service installed but we do have the sattellite on the side of the house ready to go, i have the coax cable rewired to a location close to my projector as the location it currently is will not be close enough to connect to my projector which is mounted to the ceiling, my projector is a sony vpl aw10 which im pretty sure is hdcp compliant as my ps3 runs perfectly on it (at 1080p)

the thing i am wondering about is how much i will have to pay to get myskyhd "installed" i put quotes because all the guy has to do is give me the box and its done

secondly are the hd channels going to be tv3 + sky ticket (sky sport 1 2 and sky movies 1 2) total of 5 hd channels
because im not interested in sport channels at all, and the movie channels are average we used to have telstra sky with movies but they always repeated or blocked r18 or ran old movies etc how good is the movies channels now

thirdly the cost per month should be
start up 45 ??
+ hd box rental 15??
plus movies if i want it therefore plus 10 for hd so another 30
