We've had several lockups, not changing channels correctly, not recording correctly and differing sound levels.

Going to ring Sky tomorrow.

While the picture quality on HD is great it is being let down by these bugs.

FYI,

You can do a soft reboot be pressing the select and go back button, alternatively there is a little red reset button behind the pull down door of the skycard slot.

The movies with Dolby Digital sound great… once I got it going. You can’t get Dolby Digital sound from HDMI (unlike other HD kit such as the PS3). The user manual states that HDMI only supports stereo and you need to use an optical or coaxial cable. The mute & volume don’t work via an optical cable, they didn’t with MySky 1 or Foxtel IQ  either so no surprise there. The real problem with the sound is my receiver (Yamaha RXV-3800) treats the non Dolby Digital broadcasts from the HD channels as Dolby Digital instead of pro-logic. This just uses the left & right speakers and not the centre. I have to switch the audio source to HDMI to fix this, then back to optical if I want Dolby Digital for the movies. The SD channels come through as pro-logic via the optical cable fine.  This is a real pain, I don’t want to watch the rugby the news in “stereo”.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Perhaps the HDi outputs 5.1 via optical all the time and just sets all the outputs for 2 channel signals to zero except L & R, instead of sending Dolby Surround or suchlike that could be recognised and processed into a multi-channel output.

f1guy: I recorded the F1 qualifing last night on both Mysky and Mysky HDi but an unable to watch on either piece of Hardware this morning.
The Mysky comes up with "Recording has been interupted....Please Wait" (even though I watched some of it live on this machine) and the Mysky HDi comes up "C029 Playback is unavailable Call your service provider for assistance". I can watch things live but I can't use live pause or recording on most channels. (except TV1, TV2)
Sky are sending out a technican to investigate today. My guess is they will just change the decoders to see if this resolves the problem.

I recorded the F1 Qual as well when I checked this morning the planner said it was only part recorded. I went to watch what was there and only got a black screen then when I went back to a live HD channel I got an HDCP failure message. Another red button push was needed to fix it. It turned out that I only the last 30 mins of F1 had recorded (from about 9 minutes to go in Q3 to the end).

Try the red button and see if it works OK.

I had my original My Sky replaced with My Sky HDi on Friday 1 August, and have had these problems:

1) First I was getting that C029, Playback unavailable message and I couldn't play back any recordings from any channel other than TV1 and TV2. Sky's response (the consulant seemed irritated to have to deal with this) after trying the standard reset steps, was to say the technician would have to come back. The technician who eventually called me said he wouldn't be coming back as there was nothing he could do - these glitches were Sky's problem which they would have to fix. Luckily the playback issue seemed to have sorted itself out with time.

2) I have had two (in two days) screen freezes, where the box locks up on whatever was the last image, and is only fixed with a soft red button reset.

3) Occasionally when I have the box on standby (which I do whenever the TV is not on) I am unable to turn the box back on - it doesn't respond to the remote or manual attempts to start it. Again only a reset will fix it. This is extremely frustrating when it occurs in the middle of a recording, for when you have to reset, unlike with MySky original, you lose your entire recording to that point.

On the positive side I have been very pleased with the image quality, even non-HD programming seems to look better - which in the case of my TV I attribute largely to the HDMI input. The only annoying thing is that my TV sets itself to Full 1080 to best view most programmes at this resolution, but some programmes which looked fine via my component connection look quite small now.

Do you think the glitches I mentioned above will be resolved with a software update, or they will have to swap our boxes?

It's better to be lucky than good.

I would be inclined to stop turning MySky on and off standby and leave the thing turned on all the time for a start, do you turn it off to save power? I am sure it doesn't suck to to much juice to worry about the minimal money it will save you.

Saving power was one reason, the other was because my original MySky box became quite noisey and heated up considerably if I ran it continuously. I seem to recall the manual might have even suggested putting it on standby when not using it. Needless to say I never had these problems with my original box. Also it locks up (screen freezes) when the box is running, so I don't know if just keeping it on will help.

A Sky technician returned this afternoon and resolved my C029 error. They spoke to one of the CSR team reset or reactivated the card and it all came right. The CSR wouldn't do this for me this morning as obviously the customer doesn't know what they are talking about.

They did the same for my old Mysky and now everything is good.

The only other real problem I have had is the screen going blank apart the the channel information which then requires a reboot.

The PQ on the HD channels makes the initial teething problems worthwhile.

I don't really notice any difference in PQ on the SD channels but then I would expect to as they are from the same source for all subscribers. Previously my old Mysky was connected by component so the PQ was about as good as could be expected.

The freeview HD boxes do the same, its the broadcaster sending a full time 5.1 signal. I find it a pain as well. I would rather have Dolby Digital 2.0 then them switching 5.1 on when the program was made with it. Guess its just too hard for them to do it.

It must be possible - over in Australia they set flags in the audio stream to indicate the audio format of the current show (eg. stereo or 5.1) and don't do the whole ghost channel thing like here.

Maybe the dolby digital stream can be only turned on for dolby 5.1 shows? What they do now is dumb and ruins the idea of better sound in my view.

Another issue I have, this box puts out significant Heat!!!

Maybe they are using really inefficient chips?

And, during the weekend rugby, I noticed very ugly blocks that occurred during panning.   They were very noticeable on my projector screen.

The F/Forward screen lockup problem always occurs at the same point on a recorded program.  So, I suspect the problem is in the recorded data at that point?

My last mysky box had a harddrive crash, I wonder if the harddrive on this has some corruption at that point on the drive?

Well, I will let sky know if I continue to get issues but overall I am happy.

The dark blocks that were noticable during panning were also visible on SD stream. I'd never seen that effect before even though I'm am armchair critic of the low bitrates.

A mate of mine had skipping on a recorded programme as did I. In both cases it was the first programme recorded when we recieved the boxes. We suspect there may be a hard drive format or something similar going on in the background with the first recording. No issues for me since. I have removed boxes from our TV cabinet as heat may be an ongoing issue. It does seem to get very hot!

Cheers.
