I have read literally hundreds of reviews and comments on the X95J. Also watched every You Tube video about the TV.

Apart from some reports of being able to see a "grid effect" in some games and fast moving sports on the 75" and 85" models, most of the negatives come from nit pickers and people who haven't set up their TV properly. It amazes me when the first thing that some buyers do is look for even the smallest defect, which normally isn't a problem when watching normal content, but they insist on watching and re-watching the test patterns lol. I suppose if you look for faults long enough, you will find something. After all, the perfect TV has yet to be produced, but they are getting closer.

Digital Trends on You Tube, are very good at explaining all of the different settings, and which settings that they prefer, with other options for users to try. Usually a good starting point, and by all accounts, they are good for most people.

So let's hope for another price drop shortly, and don't forget to keep an eye on The Market. I think today (or yesterday) is the end of their Mother's Day 5% off offer.

The Market give you free shipping if you use their Market+ free trial for 30 days. They do however, still charge a bulky surcharge of $89.

The Sony Store have totally free shipping until May 31st.

Bad news guys!

Sony have increased the price of the 75" X95J to $5299. 65" $4199, 85" $6295. 😒

Good news is that the 75" X90J is still $3399

Maybe the "K" models are not coming here until later than they thought

I am definitely going to buy either the 75" X95J or 75" X90J. I have done a little more research into the differences between these two models, and whether the X95J is a big enough upgrade to warrant the significant price difference between the two.

The 75" X95J is currently $1900 dearer than the 75" X90J, and its doubtful that any of our Geekzone members would be prepared to stump up that amount of money at the present time. Its likely that there will be a price drop at Queen's Birthday weekend, or when new models arrive in NZ.

So, let's say that $1000/$1100 will be the difference if and when there is said price drop. What are you getting for the premium X95J compared to the step down X90J, which can be bought for $3399 today.

X95J is available in 65", 75" and 85":

1. X-Wide Angle Viewing

2. X-Anti Reflection (not available on 65")

3. XR Contrast Booster 10

4. Improved Sound System Includes Subwoofer.

5. Aesthetically more pleasing. Metal Bezel and slimmer design

6. Brighter

X90J is available in 50", 55", 65" and 75"

1. I sit front on, so not an issue for me.

2. Possibly an issue, but I don't normally watch TV in daytime.

3. XR Contrast Booster 5. Reviews say that the contrast is very good

4. Soundbar would be an added cost if you don't already have one. I would need to listen to the TV sound first.

5. Plastic Bezel. It will be going on the wall, so who cares what it looks like 😁

6. Once again, reviews say that this is a very bright TV. The X95J is super bright.

I am going to wait until the Queen's Birthday weekend sales, and I will buy then. It really does look like the X90J is a no brainer if you don't want to spend the extra money on the Premium option. I don't mind spending an extra $500, but, even then, Do I need to? Probably not.

After having the 75x95j i can say.

1, the xwide angle is very good even in bright rooms.

2x same as above

3, x-contrasty 10 vs 5 on the x90, probably only a 5-10% increase in perceived colour brightness over the x90j

4, tv audio on the x95j is bad. real bad. I use a sony Z9f soundbar with wireless sub and wireless rears and its 100% better

5. the bezel is important to me, the x85,x90 bezels are ugly.

6, i cant use it in vivid mode its like a christmas tree, i only use in standard, cinema or game mode. jesus the x95 can pump.

if you wat for a long weekend sale, if you can afford, i think its worth the price difference, still better than paying 7-8k for a screen burning OLED.

just my 2c.

Cheers

Excellent summary

I think I'll need the x-wide viewing so at least it can match the current plasma

The TV will run most of the day so if the cost difference is nearer $500 it's the X95J for me 😀

I must measure the sitting positions to check our current angles, I wonder: do you have to sit more or less in front of a VA panel

We have been so spoilt with plasma !?!

Cheers

Some info on VA panels (copied from the web)

VA stands for vertical alignment. These LCD panels use vertically aligned liquid crystals perpendicular to the substrates. A substrate is another way to reference the piece of polarized glass used to make an LCD screen. When adding voltage, these vertically aligned crystals tilt to let the light through the screen. This technology differs from IPS panels, where the liquid crystals are positioned parallel to the substrates.

On the X90J your viewing should be okay up to 25 to 30 degrees off centre. More than that and the screen will start to lose contrast. You will still see whatever you are watching, but with washed out colours.

The X95J's X-Wide Angle coating will be okay for any off centre viewing from side seating.

Noel Leeming have dropped their price on the 75" X95J to $4499. The listing is in black text, which could indicate that this is the new "normal" price for these sets. NL usually have their listings in red text if the price is for a limited time.

The Sony Store however, still lists it at $5299, but they do price match if you want to save delivery charges until May 31st. I think that they will also drop the price to NL's level shortly.

So, its looking good for a sub $4000 price by Queen's Birthday weekend.

I read/watched a bunch of OLED reviews and having seen one instore today I think they seriously understate how badly OLEDs are affected by reflections.
Based on those reviews I was set to buy one but as I use a projector at night Autumn to Spring I'm seriously questioning that now.
I don't think a fantastic OLED picture on summer evenings is going to make up for a subpar daytime picture all year round. I'm not a cave dweller.
Also the shadow detail was better on the Q90 QLED I was comparing it to, which really surprised me.
Glad that Sony also make quality LEDs and the new tech sounds great

Interesting, as one of the things that has always put me off seriously contemplating a projector is how washed out they look (if not unusable) in brighter conditions!

As for reflections/glare, a lot of this comes down to the specific location of the TV; personally, I feel the times we need to close the curtains to view the TV during daylight would be exactly the same if we had a brighter LCD TV than the current OLED - direct light on the screen (especially part of the screen) is annoying no matter what.

Also, I would not take viewing and comparing TVs in a showroom as providing a useful 'real world' judgement, thanks to the environment and the TVs' set-up. I mean, even bog-standard LCD TVs can look ok in such an environment, and I learnt my lesson on this the hard way: having been ok with the image in the shop, I was so disappointed by it once set up at home - the terrible viewing angles were one thing, but the poor backlighting became so apparent in a darker/real-world setting. Thank god that TV is departing as soon as the new OLED I bought earlier this week arrives...

Onto completely unrelated matters, does anyone want to buy an LG 55" LCD TV with the most amazing picture quality and deepest, darkest blacksgreys?!

To clarify I have a TV and a projector, apologies if that was not clear.
So when you say you think you will need to draw the curtains as much for and LED and OLED what are you basing that on?

Thanks but no thanks.

I have a Panasonic 65” GZ1000 OLED in my Man Cave. It’s awesome in that dark room with blackout curtains, and I would recommend an OLED in this sort of environment.

My living room environment is completely different, and I would not recommend an OLED for this room with several large windows. If I only watched at night, maybe an OLED would be okay, but the extra brightness of a good LCD really makes HDR shine, just like it should.

The specular highlights of an LCD far outweigh the deeper OLED blacks in my viewing of HDR, and I really don’t mind a  little blooming, which is not too invasive on normal viewing. Many of the You Tube demos are aimed solely at OLED TV’s, and normally accentuate the black background to show off the OLED’s.

For whatever reason, I believe that the powers that be have attempted to brainwash TV buyers.

OLED and LCD both have their strength’s and weaknesses, it all depends on your personal viewing environments.

As for Projectors; My only reason to watch movies on a projector screen, would be to get that amazing big screen experience that only Projectors can deliver. Unfortunately, the poor contrast would spoil the effect. 100” plus TV’s are now available, and maybe affordable in a few years time.

Bit like the electric vehicles v petrol vehicles argument 😂

Just my personal thoughts. 🤔

The fact that no matter the brightness output of oled/led you aren’t going to out-emit the sun. A brighter panel will give you more leeway in where you can put your panel for viewing angles, and panel coating also will help too (glossy/anti-reflect), but if you have too much external light coming in it won’t matter much. Depends if you’re okay with altering image quality so you don’t have to fuss too much with what time of day you can watch certain content.

The one thing you can’t do with oled though is let it sit in direct sunlight, it will get sunlight burn-in.

Here is a You Tube video giving some helpful advice on changing the settings on your X95J, so you can get the absolute best experience from your expensive purchase.

Information coming in from the USA, is advising that the 2022 X90K, will be very close to the X95J. No Anti reflective coating, but price wise, very reasonable for a new Sony TV release. The X90K could be the sweet spot for higher end 4K UHD displays in 2022, and could also bring down the X95J current price.

Unfortunately it probably won't be released in NZ before the Queen's Birthday sales. Hopefully reviews from the US could give us some idea as to whether we should wait for it, or not. I suppose a bird in the hand (X95J) is worth two in the bush (X90K) 😁
