Stock shortage most likely, new TV models are generally released April-May.

There was the first big price drop of the year a couple of weeks ago, so I imagined that chewed through a fair amount of what stock they can get at the moment.

Yep you could be waiting till after Xmas, there is almost no stock left in NZ due to Covid.

I rang local Harvey Norman and they could do the LG GX 77" for $10800 on 5 years interest free finance or cash or the LG CX 77" for $9500 on same finance or cash deal.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Still a rip compared to Aussie, but better than 12k (for the CX) they were asking for at release, I suppose.

Tempted to go for the GX77, a little concerned it might be too large as will only be sat about 8 feet away as we watch TV in a media room (spare bedroom with a sofa in it!) as there isn't enough room in the lounge due to my kid using it as a gymnastics room!

Anyone got any feedback on a similar sized screen from that distance?

I would use some masking tape to mark out the exact dimensions on the wall and if you can see the entire thing in your field of vision without turning your head uncomfortably, it's ~~too small~~ about right. As above, the bar for too big at 4k resolution is quite high.

Given the exponential price increase going from the 65" to the 77", and at that seating distance, I'd save your money (~$4k! Enough for a second OLED TV!) and go for the 65". And given the GX is essentially the same picture quality as a CX, but with a thinner profile for flat wall-mounting, you could save ~$1-2k there as well if that isn't a requirement.

But I'm a real cheapskate with no regard for living room aesthetics, so that's just me.

My alternative was to cut a piece of cardboard to 75" size with the 65" size also outlined and place it on the wall so I can compare.

Do you want to wall mount ? If so check where your studs are and their location relative to the centre line of the TV and its vesa mounting holes. I may have to get a 900mmm wide mounting to use 2 studs 800mm apart as the middle stud of three is on the centre line so a smaller mounting would be fixed to the gib at the ends.

Noel Leeming has the Sony 55" X900H for $2199 and the 65" for $2599 for Labour weekend. Not a 'alf bad price that and I assume the others will price-match.

Sony has just started rolling out the firmware update for HDMI 2.1 too; only HFR and eARC features currently, VRR and ALLM are still in the pipeline apparently.

Took the wife to look at tvs and she had decided it has to be 75”. Put a cardboard outline behind the current 50” and it should be great, fixed to the wall, as we will be nearly 3m from it.

However, I think that size rules out an OLED on budget grounds so looking at medium to top range LED, QLED etc. Online for ~$4k I can see Sony X8000H (JB), Pani HX950 / 9000Z (Smiths) or Samsung Q70T (JB). Will need to tour the stores to see what local discounts are on offer here in Lower Hutt / Wellington.

the Sony X9000H just went under 4000 and is significantly better then the previous X8000H model you were looking at, plus as per above post you can save a further 10% (less delivery) via The Market online store using the discount code at checkout.

Put up a stencil of the 77" and had to admit that it would be too large, we're just over 2m away and 65" is the sweet spot for us.

Sony X9000H TV turned up today, was a little surprised to get the call on a public holiday. It’s now mounted on the wall, apps installed, display settings tweaked. Wife is very impressed regards the 4K detail, our previous TV was a decent Panasonic Plasma but this is a nice improvement.
