red: I am wanting to get the new My Sky Hdi box but have been given one condition by the wife before I can get it. She's happy as long as we can transfer / record content from the hard drive to dvd if needed? Is this possible?

The original MySky and the new MySky HDi are the same in this regard:

-  You can replay a recorded programme via the VCR SCART for recording either by an external VCR or DVD recorder.

AFAIK, the output will only be in SD resolution and will use Composite or S-Video because the VCR output doesn't support Component or HDMI.

Grant, do you know whether some of the content like pay per view and movies will be able to be exported at all via the scart (not even SD).  I was not sure if they used macrovision to prevent recording.

My point being, is that only 31,000 homes / businesses / pubs, motels, clubs etc [ about 4.5 % of the dwellings of who has Sky and 2.25 % of the total households ] in the whole of NZ have MySky, so most people don't know what they are missing out on. When people go for MySkyHDi which I am sure a lot will, then they will realise how good it is.

It's ok, I am also shocked by the number of people in NZ who still have dialup!

I think the upfront $599 or the $15 frightens a lot of people off.
I know it was a shock for us, however with recording a whole pile of playhouse disney for kids we saved a lot in buying dvds (oh and I was selfish to have Rugby) and my wife liked to watch a few shows when she wanted and skip all ads.  So we begrudgingly paid the $.

Can pubs/clubs etc get MySky or do they only have the std in the past?

I think that's the reason for the $15 monthly option now, the realisation that the up front $599 put a lot off and also wasn't affordable for many.

I guess we were fairly lucky, spotted a special deal on American Express Card Rewards website and redeemed - I think 80,000 points and had it installed, so didn't cost us a bean. Incidently, the first unit fried itself after a month but Sky were there the very next day and replaced it, lost a couple of kids movies and some old classic Kung Fu movies which I hassled them about and they gave us a months free rental which I thought was pretty good, but they roll around again eventually so recorded them again. Since then [ about 14 months now ] all sweet and loving it.

red: Seperatley - Noticed a motoGP fan while browsing this thread, "Motogpnz", just want to make sure your aware the documantery channel is screening a doco featuring Rossi, Biaggi, Sheen, Doohan, ect this Sunday at 21:00?

It's called "Faster - The Movie", I have it on DVD. Was screened in WS on Rialto during May as well. Although it's a bit dated now being about the 2002 season it's well worth the watch for that "fly on the wall" stuff you don't normally experience. Of course what do you think might be live on SS3 at 21:00 Sunday? Undecided

Has anyone noticed what channels and programs are running in HD already?? I have noticed the "available in HD" during the Rugby - AB vs SAF and in the England v South Africa cricket. Also it seems 80% of movies on Sky Movies 1 and 2 are running in HD and some on MGM too. Does anyone know if Discovery Channel and Nat Geo will be in HD?? Nat Geo is advertising a HD Showcase coming up soon which would have been fun to watch if Sky will be broadcasting it in HD.

I suppose the Logo just means they are in the broadcast chain as HD and would be available to the HD channels when they come on line. About marketing as much as anything.

Don't think Discovery or Nat. Geo will be HD at the start.

Nat Geo and Discovery HD are available on Foxtel, since we share their feeds for some stuff, we do get ads not for our market.

Yes, they seem to be advertising some stuff 'available in HD' already.  Guess they must have a pool of testers out there already.  Has been so far with rugby, cricket and NASCAR.  Guess it'll be shown for NRL tomorrow night too (Foxtel Monday Night League so far only NRL in HD)

Have not seen Sky Sport 1 & 2 in widescreen yet. Will only the HD option be in widescreen? Anyone know.

I suspect that sports channels will always be in 4x3 and I suspect soon that The Rugby Channel will go to HD only. Trying  to get more sports suckers  I mean fans to move to the HD platform by making the SD channels unatractive.  Just wait for the SD movie channels to have their bit rate cut to that of E Channel..

Sky Sports 1&2 go 16:9 by the end of this month (July) others will follow next month. Most other channels will go 16:9 in next couple of months. Talking the current SD channels here, not HD which naturally will be 16:9.
