Sony 55" X90h is under $2000 and might be worth considering.
It's a little more "game" friendly than the x95h as it has HDMI 2.1 support coming.

The 65" x90h is also pretty goo value at ~$2,300 if you wanted the next step up in price/size.

I personally went for the X95 over the X90 because reviews showed that the picture and sound difference was noticeable when the two models were side by side. Maybe it isn't worth the upgrade, I don't know, but it isn't a huge price difference, and it is considered they top 4k tv, and were initially a lot more expensive just a few months ago.  Also like the stand design of the X95 more, as it is one the edge of the screen.

It's getting hard to see where the next meaningful upgrade will come from, OLED quality has hardly shifted and 8K content seems a long way off being anything close to mainstream. I've got the WX and I said to my missus the other day that 10 year old me (~30 years ago) would never have believed I'd ever have a TV that was 5mm thick, 65" big and stuck to the wall with magnets, the technology available at a consumer level now is really quite extraordinary.

IMO you would need the screen to by very large to get much benefit from an 8k screen. OLED does seem to be stagnant, and LCD seems to have improved a lot. I wonder if OLED may go the way of plasma, unless they can bring the cost down to LCD levels.

I recently brought the Panasonic HX-950 65 inch. I'm feeling a little sick as I was all keen for the Sony X90H due to having HDMI 2.1 and a PS5 on the way but was talked out of it for the Panasonic because they said it was better for gaming. I had done a bit of research and at the time I knew there was something about Panasonic that I couldn't put my finger on about it. I was finally sold when he pointed to the sign that it had HDMI 2.1.

What I've just realise and has been confirmed by Panasonic is that the TV has a 2.1 port that allows Audio Low Latency but is not full 2.1 and it will never be able to be upgraded.

Obviously a lot of money and I won't be buying another TV for at least 5 years so pretty gutted that I won't be able to use the PS5 at 120FPS. I'm even thinking about seeing if they will take it back as they have sort of false advertised that it was good for gaming and has 2.1.

Nice TV though but would of went for a cheaper TV that I probably wouldn't notice the difference between the two.

Sorry to hear that bud, I would absolutely try to take it back if you feel that way. The worst they can do is fight you on it, but you hold your ground firm on that one.

Unfortunately with the way the HDMI 2.1 specification is structured, you can slap just one "feature" on there and call it "HDMI 2.1". Hell, every TV and receiver out there with eARC is technically HDMI 2.1.

If it can't do VRR or FRL, its not really what you want. Shame on the retailer or Panasonic for advertising it that way.

I'd recommend anyone trying to understand it to give this article a read.

Went into Harvey Norman today to check on stock and current price for the LG CX 55”.

They are selling it for $3999, and their next shipment is due in Jan and he thought all units were spoken for.

But he was able to secure me one from this shipment, and knocked the price down to $3272. Pretty happy with that result. :-)

I was walking past the store today and decided to pop in to see what was advertised on the T.Vs and had a big talk with the two staff that help me buy the T.V including the manager. I will have to give them a big thumbs up for how they have dealt with it. First of all they checked to see if I was within my 14 day window of 'cooling down' which I didn't know was a thing ( I wasn't by a week or two). Then they asked what tv would I go to if they were to take it back. They only really had the LG range that had full 2.1 so I said probably the Nano 91. Had a bit of discussion on what or wasn't said about the 2.1 when I brought it but was done in a very delicate way. They have offered me that they will take it back after they inspect it to ensure there is no damage. Only problem is that the Nano 91 won't be delivered until next year.

Came home to tell the wife the good news, she doesn't know it will be an extra $400 more for the 91 and she said just leave it. TV looks great, bit of a hassle of getting the TV back and then not having one for a few months. Unsure what to do. is 120FPS worth the extra money and hassle etc.

Chapter 2 :-)

I noticed that Noel Leeming now have this on their website for order with an ETA of Dec 5th to 12th. They were selling it for $3388, but they price matched the Harvey Norman price for me.

The salesman gives me a 50/50 shot of having it in by then, but assures me it’ll definitely be before Jan. And to be honest, the HN salesman didn’t give me complete confidence his stated ETA wouldn’t blow out.

How did you get NL to price match? Care to share? The guy I’ve been talking to at the Featherstone Street store was adamant that he couldn’t bring it down lower than $3388, and that the stock could be 3 to 5 weeks away.

Nothing special. I showed him the price on the 100% Electrical web page and he matched it.

To be honest, considering the stock shortages the price at Noel Leeming is still pretty good.

ah. Was it showing as out of stock online when you did? I’ll have a crack at giving them that tomorrow, thanks for that. Currently have an order placed at $3500, but maybe they’re going to get more stock than I thought.

Yes it was.

You could also try Harvey Norman. I didn’t try to price match any specific store, but simply asked them for their best price. They offered it to me for the same $3272 price. But Noel Leeming had them beat on delivery estimate (which I’m taking with a grain of salt, TBH).

I would, as you are specifically buying it for gaming with the PS5 and it is not fit for that purpose compared to the TV they steered you away from.

Considering they sold it to you with "HDMI 2.1" when in reality it only has a single basic convenience feature of 2.1 (and it doesn't even have eARC either, just basic ARC) I would be waving the CGA and demanding my money back. I think there will eventually be games that demand the extra bandwidth (think anything over 4k60fps rather than 120fps specifically) and VRR will eventually be added to the PS5. And you will probably have the TV long enough for the PS6 too...

And despite Panasonic's fancy wording, it's still a pretty basic IPS panel with edge-lit backlighting; all the fancy picture processing in the world won't make up for the sub-par HDR performance.

The LG is an improvement, but personally, I wouldn't buy another TV with an IPS panel; as mentioned earlier, all the issues with poor contrast, etc, etc... but that is my axe to grind, not yours.

In saying all that, all of this is relative to the TV you are coming from, and not worth causing a point of friction with the trouble and strife, so you are the only person who can make that call on how much leeway you have there.

Do you have another TV you can use in the meantime?

They were happy to match that Price - Though they mentioned that they'd have to cancel my current order (and send me to the back of the queue) to get that price. Was able to get them to amend my existing order to $3300 while keeping my place in the queue - He mentioned that as of 10am yesterday NL had 76 ordered to fulfill, so there could be a bit of a wait depending on how many they actually get in.

I slept it over, and decided not to upgrade after all.

x90 has the specs, but x95 has the better picture. Sony have confirmed to me the x95 won't be getting the HDMI firmware upgrade as it just doesn't have the hardware capabilities to match, including 120Mhz on 4K.

So I'll be sticking my old 1080p Pany for a few months more and see if we get any more HDMI2.1 devices on the market.
