I'm also looking for a TV, or should I say large monitor. I was thinking of getting something like the Philips 438P1/75 for $800 from PB Tech (My old 40" Philips Monitor has had a backlight fail causing daek shadow on the top 25% of the screen).

However, I am considering spending a chunk more and I'm weighing up the option to go for a TV instead. Contenders are the LG 48C1 (But NL have sold out of the $2299 bargains), Then there is the Oled LG 48 A1 at just under $1800, The Samsung 50" QN90. I notice the Panasonic JZ1000 also maybe worth considering.

About my use:

During the day it's hooked up to my work laptop running multiple Office365 apps, salesforce, etc split across a few windows.

Main reason for upgrade is to support my hobbies:

In the evening I'll use is it for Photoshop & Lightroom. Some video editing with Power Director.

I also use it for FL Studio DAW for a home studio.

The LG A1 seems well priced, but the screen burn worries me a little - Do I need the features of the c1 for the extra $500 (assuming they put one on back order). I also love the LG interface and they provide heaps of updates.

The Samsung QN90 appears to have great reviews and safer with no screen burn-in.

Panasonic, I worry a little... I have the 58EX780 in my lounge and it has barely had any updates (Finally got Disney+ a few weeks back), but then as it will rarely be used as TV, perhaps not so important.

I may game on it occasionally, but lets say less than 5% use.

Thanks for any advice :)

Thought this wasn't a bad price - going by Pricespy's history data, it's the cheapest it's been (but that can be sus as some retailers remove and re-add items frequently from their websites, which I think may stuff up this kind of data).

Must say if I had the money right now I'd be tempted to buy this to replace our heinous LG LCD 55" TV: in the weekend we'd watched half of an episode of a programme on the LG, and finished it off on our Panasonic OLED - absolutely night and day, and that was just a cooking programme (Great Kiwi Bakeoff)!

Anyone have one of the JVC sets available from the Warehouse? They are 'QLED' sets, and it seems from the model numbers they are Warehouse specific.  They have just released at 75" which looks impressive, and the 65" model reviews well (except the one person who cannot get Netflix to run on the TV!).

$3K for 75" seems good, although I see JB do a Sony 75" for just over $3k and its 4k/120 capable.  Sony X85J 75" Bravia 4K UHD Google TV [2021] | JB Hi-Fi (jbhifi.co.nz)

Anyone have thoughts on this?

I've seen neither IRL but the X85J is pretty good value.

I get that for others size is indeed everything but, personally, there are few situations now where I'd be comfortable trading off quality over quantity; in this case, I'd be happy to pay more for a 65" OLED than paying $3.5k for that 75" Sony.

That said, I don't think I would be comfortable downsizing to a 48" or whatever the new smaller OLEDs come in when replacing our 55" LCD; I'd just save a bit more and wait for a good deal on the 55" OLEDs, such as the one on sale at JB I mentioned above.

Great price for a quality 55" OLED.

As seen in the latest mailer for JB, not a bad price for this time of year

I’m looking for an LG OLED55G1PVA.

I can only find the G1 series at Harvey Norman.

Do any other retailers have them?

Going by LG’s own website, it looks like this specific model may be exclusive to HN’s, as they’re the only retailer listed:

https://www.lg.com/nz/tvs/lg-oled55g1pva#pdp_where

Other OLED TVs show a wider range of retailers, eg https://www.lg.com/nz/tvs/lg-oled65a1pva#pdp_where

JVC hasn't made TVs in over a decade meaning it's a brand licence rebadge manufactured by an obscure company. The Warehouse's price is not even very good for what it is, being a cheap TV at a non cheap price. In fact the Veon 75" might be the same TV in different clothes.

It doesn't say whether it's a 50 or 100Hz panel or list anything much in the way of specifications. But there's more to a TV than the panel. Bottom tier TVs sometimes have good panels and often that's the only good thing about them. There's the processing: cheap TVs may have very weak processors meaning poor picture processing, terrible motion with 24/25fps sources and sluggish smart software. There's the power supply units low end TVs often have: gutter oil electrolyte capacitors means you'll be dealing with a 75" millstone at some point sooner than you'd like. There's the LED backlights: cheap overdriven ones may mean undefeatable blue colour casts and premature failures. Misc random oddities like mushy remotes with obscure codes, undefeatable overscan, strange colours, 6w speakers and lengthy turn on times may turn up.

The Sony X85j 75" is in a whole different category. The Panasonic 75JX900Z 75" is also worth mentioning, you should be able to get it for less than sticker price.

My thinking is if you're going to get something as big as 75" any defects and problems are going to be supersized so quality is a must.

A mate bought a 75" Veon in a Warehouse sale for circa $1500. For general viewing it seems fine, certainly at the price.

Does anyone know what my chances are of getting an LG OLED on Friday if I go into Harvey Normans?  I'm assuming there wont be any more of a discount but now a bit worried about stock levels. I'm in Wellington and the Porirua and Hutt stores are showing stock. Not sure if I should just buy online now or go into store on Friday and try to 'haggle' a lower price.

I doubt that anyone here knows this - unless they work for HN, in which case ‘mum’. My guess is that LG OLEDs are in hot demand and short supply right now. Unlikely to be discounted on Friday. If you want one, I’d get it now because FOMO.

Also you may wish to read the posts over the past few days in this thread

If you want to haggle, go to a store that you know has stock - but go sooner rather than later. My experience with haggling on a C1 55” in HN and JB about 10 days ago is reported in the thread linked above, here

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
