livisun: anybody? do I need increase my budget?

I recommend you increase your budget $30 and take my barely used UE900 off me :)

You won't do better than that at that money.

incl free shipping in auckland?

Shipping via courier would be $5.

Think you forgot to get back regarding the ca $500 headphone amp. Would love to hear your recommendation:)

Oh, just saw this! You're quite right I did indeed forget.

Are you able to PM me? I will get a very detailed list of your requirements in order to make a good recommendation.

Didn't you just sell the HP50's a week ago ?

I am on a mission now to finish my crack amp and then finish the speedball upgrade to it so I can get back to my listening!

I saw on MassDrop the

CEntrance HiFi-M8 XL4 Portable DAC/Amplifier

Which the reviews are pretty positive for, going for $559, but decided against it in the end.

I did! Needed the money to fuel other purchases. I'd like to borrow some for the purposes of a comparative review with the new Momentums, our recall of audio impressions is far to fleeting to do that without having them on hand as well.

Yah I know what you mean. I struggle to sometimes do a side by side comparison :) It's one of those things like with the speedball upgrade for my crack amp, unless you can hear the two side by side, it's going to be somewhat difficult to make an exacting comparison.

Yes, even side by side is really difficult! You need to be able to switch fairly swiftly and seamlessly between headphones as well as volume match, which is tough. Sources and amps tend to be easier for side-by-side comparison, but even there it takes time to really drill down into the minutiae of where things differ.

I've sort of come to the point where if I am happy with the sound, I won't chase too much further, with the T1's and the HD650's they pretty much cover me for everything, and I could even likely do away with the HD650's as I like the T1's so much but I won't sell them as I'd get next to nothing for them and at some stage I'll want them again for sure.

About the only thing I could really imagine doing since I have mid range HD650's and mid high range T1's is to do something that gave me a really decent jump from the T1's and I can't see myself justifying that cost for a while. I'm guessing at the LCD3's or X's or something of that ILK.

The T1's are great, awesome genre bandwidth, great sound, comfortable, not too amp picky. I'd sit on those too were I you!

So with your desktop sorted, next comes the portable rig!

I get very little time to listen on the move, and I have a pair of these:

http://www.head-fi.org/products/monster-turbine-pro-copper-in-ear-headphones

Which I plug into an iPod 5th Generation. I generally only do that when I am on a bus or train which is almost never. I find it hard to do "nothing" but listen to music portably.

I am unsure if they would even improve if I had a mobile amp?

Sure, it'd improve, probably not worth the admission price though for true on the go listening - tends to be a great deal less critical listening than sat at a desktop rig.

Up to you of course, but I must say I enjoyed the experience massively, way more than I expected to.

What's your budget and do you want Tube or Solid State? Solid state I'd probably go with Schiit Valhalla or Lyr and for Premade Tube the Woo WA2 would be hard to look past.

I've used a couple of amps, including a headroom balanced amp and a custom built PPA with nice parts. I couldn't tell any difference between them with either HD650s or my LCD2. I can only hear much difference between the output of an iPod and the output of an amp with really hard to drive headphones. My A900s sound the same from a $1000 amp as from my computer. Back in the olden days computer audio was rubbish - these days I think it's fine for 99% of people.

I suspect amps are like those special $1000 monster HDMI cables. Some color the music slightly but overall they're toys for rich people.

You will change your tune immediately if you listen to my HE-6 out of an iPod and then a powerful dedicated amp.

Even my wife who isn't a music buff can tell the difference between my DAC+ crack amp and T1's over just dac+t1
