It's been interesting to read the comments as I will be moving into a new place just after christmas, so will be looking to buy a new TV.  It's tempting to jump now and take advantage of the Black Friday deals, but I could also wait to see what the Boxing Day deals are.  The comment about HN offering a price refund if it is cheaper on Boxing Day suggests they are confident of not offering lower prices on Boxing Day.  So maybe now is the time to buy.

My current TV is a 50" Panasonic plasma from 2010, so anything I get it likely to be a step up.  I like the idea of OLED, especially coming from a plasma panel, so have been leaning towards the LG C1 range.  My budget ($2-2.5k) means I can really only stretch to the 55" C1 which JB Hifi have for $2490 and which appears to be the lowest that model has ever been.  But I'm also drawn to the idea of a larger 65" screen.  When I got the 50" Panasonic a decade ago that was a leap forward from an old 32" CRT, but these days it seems almost paltry.  Would the biggest bang for buck come from a switch to OLED, or a jump up in screen size?

I mostly watch TV (Netflix, BBC, Disney+) and movies streamed from my NAS (1080p max), but about 10-20% of its use would be gaming (Xbox One for now, possibly upgrading in a year or two).  The room it will be in is about 4x4m (16m2), with the couch about 3m away from where the TV will be.  I haven't moved in yet, but it looks like it will be about average brightness - windows to the right side of the TV, rather than directly opposite or behind.

The models I've been looking closely at are the LG OLED55C1PVB for $2490, and the Sony Bravia XR-65X90J for $2495.  I read comments on GZ about the X85J, but it seemed like the step up to the X90J model was worth it for comparable performance with the OLED via the full array local dimming.

So my question boils down to - for the type of situation I'm in, is OLED worth more than the extra screen real estate, or is the performance of the X90J good enough to warrant getting the larger screen?

Or, alternatively - is there a better option that I haven't considered?

The picture quality of an OLED is better IMHO than larger screen and lower PQ of an LED.

I moved in July from a 50" 2008 Panasonic Plasma to a 65" Sony A8H OLED.  Don't underestimate the quality of your old plasma.  In my research it was only OLED that matched the colour range and depth of the plasma. Also given the higher resolution of current OLED over your old plasma I would recommend going for OLED over screen size

Looks like you got your Christmas wish then!

I see Panasonic's JZ1000 lineup is at more palatable prices too, combined with the cashback offer:

55" JZ1000 @ $2588 ($2338 after $250 cashback)

65" JZ1000 @ $3896 ($3596 after $300 cashback)

Haha yup :)

I actually did end up going in store over the weekend and picked a 48” up at $2498. Will be heading in again to get the difference since they’re also doing the price guarantee thing.

I was watching The Market too, but they’re not in stock plus even with the extra discount theres a $89 bulky item fee.

Probably a good thing I went in early, just like last sale stock has disappeared from most stores.

So, worth going in to JB Hifi to pick up the LG C1 today if I can?

Probably a good idea if your local still has some available.

Boxing day may be cheaper but since others have mentioned places like HN doing price guarantees till then, it’s unlikely it’ll go lower. Maybe a hundred less but at least you get it now for a month and won’t have to worry about lack of stock.

Edit: (I’ll say this and then have to eat my words a month later if it does :D, though if it does drop more I wouldn’t hold it against myself for buying now and using it for a good month.)

Go for it!!!!! The Jump in contrast and definition over the Plasma will be Amazing. Especially with the streaming services you use. With Netflix it might pay to go the family plan if you havent already to get access to that 4K/Dolby Vision etc goodness.

Thanks for the replies.  One quick follow up (slight hijack) - soundbars.  I was (almost literally) blown away by the Sonos Beam (gen2) in JB Hifi yesterday.  Is that a good choice, or are there better value offerings?  I see Sonos rarely are on sale, and the current price is $799.  I've taken a look at other threads on soundbars and acknowledge they are a big topic in their own right, but looking for some initial thoughts - given discounts are rare, it's not something I'm rushing to purchase today.

What have buyers of the LG C1, G1, Panasonic JZ2000 tv’s thought of their screens, I have read a lot of bad feedback with it being a panel lottery and most of these panels have quite bad panel colour uniformity, green or red tints, etc.
Just concerned by this and wondering if it would be wiser to wait to next years Oled’s and hope for better panel quality?
Can’t believe LG still seems to be having bad quality consistency?

Interested to know where you read this? OLED QC is pretty on point now and its not a young technology anymore.

All over the Internet, video reviews, USA - AVS Forum, UK - AV Forum etc.
It’s not just this years OLED models either, similar issues for previous years.

That’s right, not new technology hence why I am so surprised about these tinting and uniformity issues. Some customers went through the process of swapping out a few times because of the same issues.
That would be so much hassle to do in NZ I feel, doing any type of warranty request is bad enough.

I’ll do a more thorough write up later on, but yes when out of the box new I had a little disappointment when testing some media, hdr and uniformity tests. The first uniformity test the panel showed the ‘grid’ issue and a small darker smudge in the bottom left corner (almost like a logo IR)

But 24 hour runtime later from hdr media and hdr gaming too, that grid imprint is practically gone and the smudge is lessened significantly. I haven’t run a pixel refresh yet but the TV has been doing it’s self clean stuff as I’ve noticed it clicking on and off after I’ve stopped using it.

It’s a bit of a toss up as you can’t actually compare when brand new, you do have to let it run for a bit. Which isn’t great for returns, but is not highly noticeable when viewing content off the bat.

Edit: just to be clear, when actually running content the picture quality is amazing and anybody reading shouldn’t be put off by what I wrote above. Synthetic tests will show up these issues, but they are negligible in majority of content viewing.

You may find online that a lot of panels aren’t perfect, and it becomes a lottery to find one that passes all tests. But it doesn’t affect 95-99% of use.
