Does anyone know which of the cheap 4K TVs are the best?
I have been looking at the following 43" ones:
Samsung AU9000 - ~$900
LG UP81 - ~$850
Sony X80J - ~$1,000
Sony X85J ~$1,250
I went back today to Harvey Norman and asked them to process their Price Promise, to match boxing day sale price which had reduced from the black friday sales by just over $600, and they did with no questions asked. Great discount on a fantastic TV that we are enjoying a lot.

So if you'd bought a TV last week and in the boxing day sale it has been reduced, they'd refund the difference? Or do you need to have 'product care'?
Cheers

Unsure of equivalent Panasonic, search doesn't bring much up
Panasonic spec same as the X80 and X90 from Sony would be Panasonic TH-65JX900Z (circa $2k on special) or Panasonic TH-65JX800Z $1700-$1800 all day.
New sets normally launch middle to end of the year from memory but covid has pushed a lot back. Think July to October.
On any of the sets you have listed there is plenty of wriggle room for prices
Panasonic 65GZ1000, Onkyo RZ730, Atmos 5.1.2, AppleTV 4K, Nest Mini's, PS5, PS3, MacbookPro, iPad Pro, Apple watch SE2, iPhone 15+
Thought I would provide an update for those that are interested in the Sony OLED A80J/A90J.
I purchased the A80J 65" via the boxing day sales and have been enjoying the upgrade from my Panasonic Plasma which I have had for at least 15 years.
Sony have recently released the much awaited VRR update and I downloaded it today. This now completes the TV and should help potential buyers put this issue behind them. While the LG C1 etc will still be the go to TV for hardcore gamers, for those of us who enjoy a little gaming on the side can at least still use this new technology and without feeling left out in the cold.
It does look like Sony are getting their TV's updated to VRR in a chicken vs egg scenario... so they can announce the update to their PS5 at some point.
With Microsoft having had VRR since the last generation they are really playing catchup.
Then again, looking at sales / demand for the PS5 it isn't something that consumers actually seem to care about outside of tech forums?
On a relevant note, there is supposedly a Sony A75K entry-entry level OLED which will top out at 65" in the 2022 line-up. Not sure what we're getting locally but it would be great if we could get this at a decent chunk below the A80J goes for here.
Seems that functionally it is the same TV and panel as the A80K will be, but without the pretty case and with a lower-level sound system. Will be keen to see how it stacks up with the C1/C2 and A1/A2 price-wise.

From FlatpanelsHD, looks like it will be somewhere north of the A series, but presumably lower than the A80/C series. Hopefully it doesn't end up being like the LG B series pricing in NZ, where it seems to sit 90%+ the price of the C model.
At least it's not a gawd-awful 60hz panel like the A series... I would happily pay less for the same display quality but worse built-in audio and a less-pretty case.

I really struggle with the idea that someone buying an OLED TV by default is going to be the kind of person who goes "You know what, default factory TV speakers are fine with me, I won't get like a basic $500 soundbar that will be far better anyway".
I'd be dropping one into an old-ish Home Theatre system but it would still outperform almost any flatscreen you can buy today for under $10K.

I guess they are targeting people who buy specs rather than people who know what those specs means. "Check out my cool new expenzive TV, it's a Sony, it's an OLED, it's also got this cool feature where the display is a giant speaker". I mean really, I wish it worked as well as an decent center speaker for the whole sound-coming-from-picture, but x to doubt.
It's like TV smart features; it's there as another selling point, not as an actual value add. If they were selling a TV for actual HT enthusiasts, we would be getting the Cup model
I'm in the video business. I'm a total picture snob, which is why I own a LG CX and an LG G1. My bar is lower on requirements for audio. I'm happy with the built in speakers on these TVs - they sound decent enough for me.
I can understand some people wanting to add a soundbar, but I don't need one. Also gone are days I care about need to have a full surround system, and everything connected to a receiver/amp. I love the simplicity of the setup, and the lack of extra crap in the room.
JB Hi-Fi AU have a few 'coming soon' TV's on their website now.
