Stupid courier was supposed to be here at opening of business, says he skipped us and will be there either 1pm or 4:30pm. :(
I am hoping against all hope there is the 2 cables in the box, one balanced and one non-balanced to ensure I can use them tonight. I haven't an adapter.

Yes there should be two cables in the box.
They're HEREEEEEEE!
Yes two cables.
Now I have to wait till 4pm till I can take them home and listen to them. I have a Squash tournament at 6pm so I won't be listening now till potentially 9pm tomorrow night! So sad.
You don't look so well, you should take the rest of the work day off ;)

Well, I ended up getting an hour with them before I had my game, and I have to say.. Sadly I am really disappointed. They sound awful. Recessed, lifeless, next to no bass. I haven't enjoyed a single one of my reference tracks on it. Given the rave reviews, I am wondering if mine is faulty.
I have it paired with a Crack Amp, universally well thought of with these HP, and a Schiit Bifrost DAC.
I'mm try it with my DSD iMicro and see what happens, but I am fairly discouraged. I've wanted a pair of HD800 then S for 3+ years.

I had similar experience initially, I'd say give it some time, you might start to appreciate the fine details like me. You can also apply a little bit EQ, see if you like it better that way. I copied the EQ this guy uses, I quite like his settings.

How are these going? Any better after a good break in period?

You don't have to use the exact same software. For me, I simply match my parametric EQ as closely to his as I could in my player of choice.

Sorry I don't mean to sound dumb, but I am not sure what you mean? Do you have a screenshot for something like Foobar 2000 or Winyl?

I should have said a player of your choice that supports parametric EQ. I use deadbeef and this is the EQ I use for my HD800 S:
If you look closely, my EQ curve roughly follows the curve in the HD800 S review. The more bands you have the easier it is to recreate a similar configuration. If you have fewer bands, e.g. using VLC, then you'll most likely end up changing up just one or two frequencies.
If you don't know already, on the same website, you can read about how the frequency response is measured, and how to fine tune the response to match the ideal curve. If you already knew about all that, all you have to do is interpret the frequency response of the HD800 S and try to apply your own set of EQ values.
