Geektastic:

I quite like the portability of the Apple APP but they ain't cheap and I would not want to spend that much just to get stuck with something that drives me nuts and have to sell it at a loss a week later. I wondered if anyone else had used them and whether they had experienced anything like what I describe.

Not tried them and not a big fan of in ear headphones. BUT, a little tip: If you buy them from Apple.co.nz I am pretty sure you can return them if you are not happy with them within 14 days. Free return postage as well.

I bought a pair of AirPods Pro a couple of months ago. They have slightly less detail in some parts of the frequency spectrum compared with the more expensive offerings from Sennheiser or Bose, but overall the sound quality is better than you might expect. They appear to be more neutral and well controlled than the Beats alternatives.

As a product made by a computer company they occasionally exhibit some erratic behaviours, e.g. failing to charge, battery meter showing incorrect readings, etc.

I haven't experienced any sort of in-ear irritation but I don't think I've ever noticed that with any in ears. It's worth noting that the ear inserts are quite large - I find the smallest size just a bit larger than would be ideal for me. They don't tend to fall out, but I'm convinced they have a perfect seal all the time.

I will check that - might be a way forward. Thanks!

I was perusing the wares at addictedtoaudio.co.nz and I see they now have a date (August 1st) for the opening of their Auckland store.

Been looking at upping my headphone game, and given I already like the Sennheiser sound, I've been looking at the oft-recommended Massdrop x Senneheiser HD6XX.

Since Drop no longer wants to ship to NZ, ATA has it for $449 incl. shipping (assuming NZD?), its a little bit extra over the converted-to-NZD $331 NZD from Drop, so still considering if it is worth paying the premium to forgo the rigmarole of sorting shipping myself.

Any other similar recommendations for the money?

I have the HD6XX's and they're very good for the money (purchased from MassDrop directly when the exchange rate was better).

Worth spending if the $'s is right for you.

I drove past the Addicted 2 Audio venue a while back, it's looking pretty empty to me (if it's the empty shop front I think it is).

I wonder if it will be open to hit the time frame on their site?

Not headphones per se.

However, I just snagged the Bose Soundwear in a deal that came via email at about half price. I have read a number of reviews - including from Tyll Hertsens if you know who he is - in which the reviewer began from a sceptical position and by the end, was converted.

Since Bose offer free refunds within 30 days I thought that a half price offer was worth a punt. Well, colour me converted. If you want to remain more aware of your surroundings than headphones permit, this device is actually great. You can walk around with it around your neck (you'll soon forget it is there) and it is akin to having a pair of mini speakers that travel round the house with you. You can also deal with phone calls whilst wearing it.

Of course it does not hide the sound completely from others around you like headphones would, so if that is an issue it would not be suitable and the SQ, whilst perfectly fine, is no match for top class headphones - although they would certainly cost a great deal more.

It is a bit of a niche product, but if you have the niche, it is really good.

They will certainly suit some, but by all accounts sales have been poor...

Maybe ahead of their time?

Or maybe people just don't want to share their music with others.

Hmm - I too thought they could be interesting, but their RRP is a couple of hundred more than I was willing to impulse spend on yet another audio device (I think I have networked powered sets of speakers in almost every room in my house in addition to my too many pairs of headphones).

I'll keep an eye on their price and might bite if they get low enough, even though I'm not entirely sure when I would use them :) Was your emailed sale from Bose or a standard retailer?

Drop not shipping to NZ?  Noooo  Is that just that item or all products?

They've always not supplied all their items to NZ, and especially the HD 6XX, probably because of Sennheiser distribution arrangements. I remember when I bought a pair of them in 2017 from massdrop that they were providing a work-around of sending the headphones via a 3-rd party dropshipper rather than directly, but it sounds like they aren't doing that any more.

I know I've currently got a couple of pairs of Koss KPH30i awaiting shipment from drop, so they are still sending other items

I'm not sure how it used to work, but when i tried to checkout with the Sennheiser's, it wouldn't let me choose NZ as a shipping address.

As per tieke, i tried something else and NZ was an option, so just Sennheiser then?

Yeah - from this discussion it sounds like there's an Australian Sennheiser distributor that sells them, so Massdrop can't ship them to Australia (or to us). This was also the case in 2017, but so many people were asking massdrop to send their Aus/NZ orders to a US-based on-shipper, that massdrop just made an arrangement to use a particular on-shipper when ordering from outside the US. I suspect that was seen as majorly bending the rules of their Sennheiser agreement so now you have to use YouShop etc yourself, with the resulting increase in cost and time (the on-shipping delivery cost was only US$15 when I purchased them).

It would not suit anyone who needs to prevent others from listening. I work from home so only the dogs to worry about. I could of course just use speakers but they do not move with you and the phone functionality is not there either.

If a reader's situation would be similar they are certainly worth a try. I find not being disconnected from the world around me suits me better during the day.

At the price they are letting them go at just now, they are a bargain if you have the niche. They are a bit idiosyncratic, I would say - although you do have to be pretty close to someone wearing them to actually hear them unless they are cranked very loud.
