Hi All,

This might seem like a silly question. What shound a crossover frequency be set to?

I've got a setup of a Onkyo TX-NR609 with a mission 5.1 setup.

Fronts: Mission M35
Centre Mission M3C1
Surrounds Mission M31

Now the Onkyo user guide says for crossover frequency setup

'With these settings, you can specify which speakers are
connected and a crossover frequency for each speaker.
Specify “Full Band” for speakers that can output low frequency
bass sounds adequately, for example, speakers
with a good sized woofer. For smaller speakers, specify a
crossover frequency. Sounds below the crossover frequency
will be output by the subwoofer instead of the
speaker. Refer to your speaker’s manuals to determine the
optimum crossover frequencies. If you set up your speakers
using Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and
Speaker Setup, please make sure manually that any THX
speakers are set to “80Hz(THX)” crossover.'

Now I have the Front (M35) and centre (M3c1) set as 'Full Band' and all have been set with a 4ohms impedence.

But nowhere can I find what would be a good crossover frequency for the surrounds

How does one determine the optimum crossover frequency?

As it tends to indicate,

If they are quite small and only have a single 4-6" speaker and a tweeter its more worthwhile seting the cutoff to about 125Hz.

That way anything below is dropped and will come from the Sub (if you have one) or the fronts.

Mine has a large/small option which does similar redirection, then a cutoff on the sub and sub output itself

Have my rears on small, they dont need to belt out bass to shake the room (not are able) but crisp enough for the rest of rear dialogue/surrounds

/ninja edit. A post google finds "The bass performance of the m31s, though obviously not as deep as the 782s, is average for bookshelf speakers with the rated response going down to 65Hz."

Theres your answer :)

Frequency response: 65 - 20,000 Hz

Also appears they are 8Ohm not 4.

By the book...
Look at the specs for your speakers, set X-over freq at least 10Hz above their lower limit.

Throw the book away...

I've found HT systems sound best with minimal bass management and manual calibration instead of the near-useless Audyssey or whatever.

Physically locate speakers properly, in free space, away from TV cabinets and other furniture.

Set all speakers to large.

Balance speakers manually.

Job done.

Your fronts go down to 40Hz, so you can set your receivers LTE crossover to 50Hz's and see what you think.
Personally, I'd be treating it as a trial and error thing.
For music I like 50Hz (so the sub isn't really doing much work, instead the fronts are doing the heavy lifting... but mainly, I'm not a fan of subs and music) and I set the crossover to 80Hz for movie time.
Having said that, looking for settings on the interweb is a bit of a fools errand, as your room / placement will have a massive effect on the bottom end, meaning a setup that will work in one persons room may not work in yours.

Sorry to all for comments so far, been meaning to get the speaker specs out..

Even though the speakers are capable of 8Ohms, would you still recommend setting them to 4.

Onkyo user guide says:

If the impedance of any speaker is 4 ohms or more but less

than 6, set the minimum speaker impedance to 4 ohms.

So I'd be safe in setting the impedence to 6. 4 or 6 are my only options

��4ohms:

Select if the impedance of any speaker is 4 ohms or

more but less than 6.

��6ohms:

Select if the impedances of all speakers are between

6 and 16 ohms.

Sorry with all the little posts, but also talking with a sales rep from Sound Expression in wgtn, they were suggesting have the crossover at 120khz for the surrounds.

Now 65 or 60khz or 120khz??

What's the difference??

If I were to play a classic surround scene (the Matrix lobby scene) would I notice a difference between 65 and 120 khz?
