Hi all, thanks for the prev help.  We got a Samsung Series 5 Smart TV 50" LED.  It was the cheapest LED for that price and came with Smart.  The other we thought about was a Plasma 50" non Smart.

I have learnt how to play items off a USB stick and to record onto the USB stick. Also mirror mode with a smartphone and link youtube onto the TV.

Questions:
1.  Is it possible to share a non-Samsung computer Windows 7 folder or a USB stick attached to my Fritzbox and play the photo or video?

2.  I have a LG phone, do I use Smart-share to link it to Allshare so I can watch TV on the phone?

3.  Youtube linking to the TV, is this just for the newer phones?  Someone has a HTC Wildfire and he says the phone doesn't have the option?

4.  Do any of you have the TV Webcam or the TV keyboard?  Without a keyoard it is a bit limited.  We plugged a laptop via HDMI and it has so much more functionality than the Smart TV .......

I got it in LV Martins (Wellington), $1499. The Plasma non Smart was $1199 online which was already the cheapest discounted to $999 (in-store) but the parents wanted LED. The Plasma was warmer too at the glass. The savings in power might make up for it? The LED was certified as a 5.5 star out of 6 for efficiency, 3 star for that Plasma. 400kW less usage per year.

I checked the prices with Noel Leeming, Harvey Norman but not JB HIfI due to parking issues ...

One more question:
Someone who has tried USB recording says that it only works with the Freeview tuner, is this right? So the AV - old sky won't work. Haven't tried it with HDMI yet .....

Awesome

Isn't AllShare just Samsung's brand name for UPnP/DLNA?

If you create a windows shared folder I am pretty sure you should be able to access it via all share - the other option a few other people have been discussing on gz recently is plex. You can get plex for your PCM for free and there should be a plex client for the Samsung under the Samsung apps.

Use PLEX from a PC to the TV's PLEX app...
AllShare is annoying at the best of times (IMHO).

But yes, your computer is a lot smarter than the so called 'smart TV's... another reason why HTPC's are the ultimate solutions.

I'll look into Plex.

The TV's Allshare - I managed to use Media Player on the computer and enable streaming. The TV now works but it doesn't seem to be able to browse a network drive folder and view etc .. like a normal computer.

USB recording appears to work on Freeview only. It doesn't record RCA ie old Sky nor the HDMI with our only device Xbox.

I was told the Fritzbox USB stick doesn't work, it can see the Fritzbox, maybe that is a USB HD or a builtin storage device router?

So I take it no one has invested into TV Webcams and TV keyboards?

Someone also said the USB recorded content cannot be played on a computer?  Will double check that.

Doubt any smart TV's will offer that, as a PVR they are simply spooling to disc the inbound TS from the broadcaster, unless they have an onboard encoder how on earth can they achieve that from a analog or HDMI source.

ajobbins: Isn't AllShare just Samsung's brand name for UPnP/DLNA?

Yep.

Same way I use XBMC on the PC instead of Plex etc as it has a built in uPNP/DLNA server. Create shares and use that as my media server to the TVs built in media player. Whee no realtime re-encoding.

Yes, USB will only record the TV signal not other inputs. No, it may not play on the PC as it is in its own container format and often contains content copy encoding.

Borrow mates bluetooth USB sticks and keyboards. Have heard MS ones work better, but should be fine. However the current panasonic browser leaves much to be desired. Its slow/cludgy and doesn't support flash.

Sending youtube links may be a samsung only thing or could be an android/youtube thing. As my Note 10.1 does it too via the youtube app.

And no, you won't find a nice way of watching shared content on your phone. Its used as a transport/in-between only as opposed to a media player.

Well .. Smart TV was just a byproduct that came with it lol. Cannot us really using it a lot. I would have thought many consumers would find it useful to watch the recorded television be on a USB stick or on the actual TV but thru another computer. That's what sharing might mean ..... Seems like a game console squashed into a TV.

Ranting on ... not that would use it very often. But it appears the Samsung TV won't display on my LG phone. It has to be a Samsung phone. It wants an app called "Allshare Cast". Also I cannot download the Samsung remote control software. Not very smart at all .....
