Hi all,

Am looking to finally upgrade my Panasonic PY800 plasma to a 2108 65” model.

Have started my research and the models that stand out for 2018 are the
Sony A8F, Sony 90F and LG C8.

I would really like an OLED but price may be an issue. I spent sometime in store yesterday comparing the OLEDs to the 90F and I thought the 90F stood up well. Blacks were the big difference but I thought the movement on the 90F looked excellent.

My question is what kind of discount others have gotten at this time of year given these are new release tvs? I see last years C7 can be had for under $5k on clearance and 900E for 3K. Do you think it would possible to get close to this pricing on the 2018 models now? Anyone else looking at these models, what pricing have you been offered?

Thanks

You have zero chance of getting any discounts anywhere close to the clear out pricing of 2017 stock. Infact you have pretty much zero chance of negotiating any sort of meaningful discount at this time of the product life cycle.

If you wanted a TV you should have purchased it two months when there was still stock of 2017 products and not just display models. The 65C7 got as low as $4199 during the Easter sales which was a truly amazing price.

Right now you either need to pay RRP, settle for a display model clearance of 2017 stock (which I wouldn't as they would have all likely been display display models for at least a few months) or wait until later in 2018 or early 2019 when pricing will naturally drop again as part of the product life cycle.

Yep, right before the release of the 2018 models (Anzac day sale) I picked up a 65" X90E for $2.5k which was advertised on special for $2.9k, was the last I could find in CHCH that wasn't a display model. I'd say any chance of a decent discount on 2018 would be slim to none.

I definitely wouldn't pay the current price of the X90F seeing as it's only a small (if any) upgrade over the 2017 model (check rtings comparison on both)

If you can grab a OLED then pull the trigger.

From what I can tell the A8F is exactly the same as last year's A1 'under the hood'. Changes are mainly cosmetic. If you can still pick up an A1 that will be a matter of luck.
What ever you do DON'T buy an ex display model OLED. Running the same loop day in, day out, and particularly when some shops use centralised switching to turn all their sets off means some display units will have areas that are already half-lifed.
I wouldn't expect to see discounting on this year's stock until at least Labour Weekend, and more likely Christmas.

Sounds like I’ve got a challenge. Will start talking prices to retailers. Keen to hear what prices others have managed to get on these tvs.

It's not a challenge - you will simply be wasting your time because there are no big rebates or discounting available from any manufacturers on new 2018 models.

Sure you'll get a small discount and you can guarantee places like Noel Leeming will be running Queens Birthday sales with probably have 15% off but if you're expecting being able to negotiate a discount to bring pricing down to 2017 levels you're going to be totally out of luck.

This time of year isn't the time to buy a TV if you're wanting a bargain. It's the time of the year in the product life cycle that early adopters wanting the latest technology pay a premium for it.

The panel on this year's models is pretty much identical - you can't really improve on perfect. The main difference is the new processing chip.

I guess we’ll see, no harm in trying right.
Agree on the A1 using the same tech as the A8F, but I don’t like the way the A1 sits.

Guarantee that the prices won't hit the lows of last years models for quite some time.

Typically Noel Leeming lose their cool first and take 20 or 25 percent off before the other big players.

Noel Leeming has the C8 for $5999 this long weekend. The C7 didn't hit $6k mark till around late October last year. Might be able to negotiate it down to around $5.5 at one of the other retailers.

Question is, where will things bottom out later in the year? Do we see it hit $4.5-4k in November? Not in a rush to pick one up, but if the early buyer tax is <$1k vs the November onwards price, then I might pull the trigger sooner rather than later.

How much normal use do you get out of an OLED before burn in sets in? Is the burn is bad? I had a plasma and they say screen burn is widespread but to my eyes it was only evident when the screen displayed a black picture, as long as something was shown the burn in marks are not visible.

It varies and heavily depends on the content that's been watched on the TV. When it happens, I saw ghost images over some particular background, ie. light grey, green or red colour.

I own a plasma for almost ten years with no obvious sign of burn-in so far; I mostly watch movies and occasionally play games with it - no static content for long period of time is what I am trying to say here.

So chances are if you haven't got any problem with your plasma, and you don't plan to change the content you watch regularly, it's unlikely you will get different result from the plasma you own.

By the way, the price for 65" X90F at JB HiFi is quite decent, given the time it's been introduced to the market. For someone who doesn't want to bear any risk of burn-in, this model can be a good pocket candidate (other than finding a 65X9000E under $3k, in my opinion).

Oh the screen burn is very real on plasma. When you have a black screen you can see images layered over images over images about a thousand times over! Then there are one or two images without many layers over it, those are rather vivid.

So $6000 and $4500 for the 65" and 55" (JBHiFi 25% QBW special) become my new base price for the A8. Unfortunately, both my plasmas are still going strong, so can't justify the upgrade at the moment.
Considering last year's A1 started off at $10000 for the 65" then it is encouraging to see the prices dropping already.
