Using an Apple TV for streaming services and got sick of Youtube stuttering due to most content being 60Hz and the ATV being set to 50Hz. The match frame rate setting is turned on, but the Youtube app happily ignores it, leading to a stuttering image.

OK, so try setting the ATV to 60Hz instead. Youtube now looks OK, but local content from TVNZ+ is problematic. It seems TVNZ+ will only match frame rate on live content. Swap between say Duke & Bloomberg live channels and the frame rate is correctly set, but stream any other content at it goes to the base 60Hz setting (i.e. stuttery for the 50Hz content being fed).

The Apple TV+ app works fine - as expected, it always gets the right frame rate.

Anything else to try, other than Youtube & TVNZ fixing their respective apps?

Nope, Panasonic. TV doesn't matter though, it will happily switch to whatever refresh rate is being sent to it, just not all apps are honouring the setting.

If the app doesn’t support the frame rate or hdr match feature it will go with the default setting. To be fair I haven’t noticed much issue with frame rate, it is more the hdr setting.

I've found the dynamic range switching seems OK, but don't generally use it. It's the watching content that isn't the default framerate on those particular apps that is annoying. It's not the end of the world, just a bit juddery on fast moving content.

I have a Pana OLED and use ATV4K a lot. I don't notice any issues with frame rates & I use TVNZ+, Youtube, Apple TV and stream through Infuse.  I'll check my settings tonight

I have frame rate switching enabled on my FireStick Max and MythTV front end and it makes a huge difference if you have 24fps material in addition to 50/60Hz Tv material.

If only the world would stop persisting with legacy 50FPS content really.

This is a problem better solved by different TVs. Seems that my samsung hated 50FPS over a 60 link, but my LG gives an acceptable result so I just leave it set to 60 on everything. 24 works ok over that and nothing worth watching is really made in 50 or 25 that I care about other than a few UK youtubers who were probably screwed over when they bought their PAL market cameras a while back and have just stuck with it.

What Apple TV?

I don’t notice this issue. I have Apple TV, Panasonic TV. Maybe I have a super power and don’t notice? I watch mostly YouTube.

Ideally you should see the TV switch to the right framerate for the source content - usually 50 or 60Hz. 24Hz for film. If it's not right, it's still watchable, but once you see the judder you can't unsee it. It's subtle but present.

Okay. From the top

Format = Dolby Vision 4K

Match Content = Frame Rate

within the Match Content option.

Match Dynamic Range = Off

Match Frame Rate = On

i don’t have any issues at all with that.

Precisely the settings I have. But have you selected 50 or 60Hz Dolby Vision?

Then try playing content from Youtube that is not the same framerate as selected above. Youtube app won't switch the framerate.

its 50Hz which I think is standard when using NZ setup on ATV. I should also clarify I run the ATV through my AVR then to the TV. On movies it switches to 24Hz when needed and defaults to 4K 50Hz on YouTube. I don’t watch any SDR as my new sky box upscales SDR anyway. All my apps run 4K through the ATV.

maybe it’s a YouTube app setting that’s causing an issue?

Yeah, exactly what I see. There's not a whole lot of 50Hz content on Youtube, more 60Hz, but it doesn't auto switch.

What is the reason for it setting the output to 50Hz by default tho? There is almost nothing that is using that.
