My Smart TV can connect to bluetooth speakers, including headphones.

I'm looking for a set of affordable-ish (max budget $150) bluetooth headphones (over-ear or on-ear). There is a strong preference for a charging cradle, that sits behind the TV out of sight.

It's mostly for watching youtube videos so I don't need particularly high fidelity.

I don't want anything with a transmitter that plugs into the TV.

I'm not having a lot of luck finding anything.  Do I need to give up on the charging cradle?

I can't help with suggestions, other than to say be aware of latency. Trying to sort out bluetooth headphones for mum has always resulted in a noticeable lag, so voices and sounds were terribly out of sync with what's on the screen. So much so she stopped using them. If the headphones and TV both support aptx etc, it might not be so bad. We gave up on Bluetooth.

I know it's not what you're after, but the Sennheiser headphones with charging cradle in the transmitter are working fine.

That latency issue is good to know thanks.  The issue with a separate transmitter is I don't have spare audio output for it.  Sennheiser look nice but a bit spendy.

As a feasibility test, I might try a few bluetooth devices and see if there are latency issues with them. A mate has similar TV that outputs to a soundbar by bluetooth and no issues.

I think some TVs can adjust sync? Their Samsung doesn't have any adjustment in that department, so they're out of luck.

I have a Ugreen Bluetooth transmitter I plug into my receiver headphone output, which I pair with some moderate priced $100 or so 1More headphones I got from Amazon AU. There's no charging cradle, they're USB-C charged but they last ages between charges, and I haven't noticed any latency either.

TVs will adjust the video delay to match the audio of speakers for the inbuilt apps, same as when you use bluetooth on a phone or tablet, but IME it does nothing with the HDMI input to delay that.

Not seen a TV with no audio out on them, is there nothing at all on it? Not even an ARC port that you can plug an extractor into?

There are two HDMI ports of course but they're both occupied.  One (the ARC port) with the sound bar, one the other takes the BD player input.  Maybe an optical port (I'm not at home).  Nothing like a headphone jack or RCA audio out.  The soundbar doesn't have any outputs.

If you have optical out then you are fine, just put a DAC on that or use a bluetooth sender with optical in on it. The one I has also has optical and analog out and a switch to work both ways to let you send from a phone to a speaker as well. Does apt-x LL which is tolerable with the headphones that support it for gaming and HDMI in, whereas SBC on the TVs inbuilt bluetooth was far too laggy.

I'm really glad I asked.  This is way more complicated than I thought it would be.

As others have said, latency with bluetooth on TVs can be a pain. It will be fine if either the TV self adjusts, or if both sending and receiving bluetooth device support apt-X codecs. I think your suggestion of testing with something you've already got is sensible so you at least know what you're working with.

When you go shopping, I feel like the charging stand may be an issue. You can get Teams/office/business bluetooth headsets with charging stands but they are quite spendy. But if you can pivot to plugging in to charge there will be tonnes of options to suit.

Also IME with knowing someone that overseas an office of people with overpriced jabra stuff that has charging stands, people cannot put things on them properly, and they are always breaking them.

I found it simple. Plug in a transmitter, grab bluetooth headphones, success.

I thought it would be just like pairing headphones with the laptop/tablet/phone - no sync issues.  I was leaning toward a direct BT link between the TV and the headphones because they'd then be usable for other devices.  But if I have a spare output for transmitter, I might have to go there.  Quite a few have transmitters that double as charging cradles so it might no be such a bad thing

I have one of those (Plantronics).  Candidate #1 for testing. I bought it during lockdown.  Still going good, despite daily use.

But there are sync issues with a PC or tablet for anything that is live content, like gaming or the video coming in from an external device.

Its only pre-recorded stuff that it can buffer the video decode chain that you get them delaying the video to match the audio. And then you get laggyness with seeking and play/pause which is horrible.

I remember that plex on my android TV would not do the thing for delay as well, and it needed me to go into somewhere and adjust it manually till it was ok on the bluetooth, and then it was all stuffed up when playing out the HDMI to the home theatre.

Right.  I've not experienced any on my devices.  Maybe I'm just undiscerning 🤣
