Hi All

I just wanted to see if anybody else was having issues with their HTPC after they installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1.

For the sake of clarity, I use Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with a BlackGold BGT3595 dual tuner. I only get TV from satellite so only use the DVB-S/2 side of the quad tuner.

I installed SP1 about 2 - 3 weeks ago - not long after it was released. Ever since then, I've been having intermittent problems when watching both live and recorded television that the program will pause and come up with a screen "Video Error, the files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly..."

At first, I didn't link the cause of this problem to the installation of SP1, however after doing some investigation I seemed to be finding a lot of articles with other users having similar problems when using their Xbox as an extender after the installation of SP1.

This was too much of a coincidence for me, so I uninstalled SP1 and have not had the issue since.

I just wondered if this was an issue that anybody else was having???

cant say i've seen that since i swapped out the dual nova-s dvbs tuners for DVB-T ones. perhaps it is some bug with the MPEG2. I didnt try the dvb-s with SP1 but i used to get it every now and then pre-SP1

p.s. my case temperature also nearly halved after ditching the dvb-s for dvb-t

You're not rocking a Catalyst Driver are you? 11.2 perhaps? The MediaPortal users have noted that issues are present in this driver and are advising use of 11.1. I know you're using 7MC but it could still be valid.

3 Years? That seems a long time to have this error with no resolution. How often does this happen, and is it with a DVB-S or DVB-T tuner?

Hi - thanks for the tip, but no, I am using a nVidia 9800GT graphcs card. I have to say that I did in fact update my video drivers to the latest version when I started getting this error, however this made no difference.

Hi Regs

Thanks for the side comment on case temp. This gives me heart as I see in an announcement on Sunday that Gisborne (amongst other areas) will be getting Freeview HD service prior to the World Cup. After I saw this I made some enquiries locally and I'm hearing that it should be installed by July at the latest.

Maybe your best bet is to try reinstalling the OS?

Hmmm... the thought of reinstalling the OS sends shivers up my spine.

i reinstalled my htpc from scratch the other day. it was so fast this time - <2 hours. i installed win 7 x64 sp1, added divx codec + haali splitter and ac3filter. all my video files are working great including sound, and ditto for the same files on the xbox extender. EPG was a breeze to setup - basically backed up the config files pre-install and then replaced them after reinstalling epgcollector and BSEPG. Few minutes to re-point my media libraries and recorded tv folders and then a few more to re-configure series recordings (i only have a dozen or so current)

oh, and the reason for the reinstall was ripping out an underpowered AMD sck 939 dual core 3500+ processor/board and replacing with a pentium core 2 E6300. even though the e6300 isnt a fast chip by todays standards, it kicked a55 over the AMD and dropped the case temperature even further. cpu around 30deg and GPU (nvidia passive 8400gs) under 50deg now. i was regularly exceeding 100deg with the GPU when i had the DVBS *and* the AMD together. since upgrading the cpu/board, the HTPC and xbox extender are both responding nicely now. with the old cpu i would get constant mini-freezes and lag

But the way I fixed my not-related-to SP1 WMC tuner poo poo was to remove WMC via control panel remove windows 7 feature and let it be gone and then via control panel add windows 7 feature to reinstall the media center and start from scratch

haha, 3 different OS's (XP, Vista and 7 x64), 3 different tuner cards, different HDDs, codecs and Mobo. 4 different houses (with diff sky dish at each place) all with DVB-S.

I've given too many hours to think about to try and fix so I now just accept it. Will last about 20secs and maybe once every 3-4weeks.

I've had exactly the same thing intermittently for years too. Most often happens after resume from standby when I haven't rebooted for ages.

Always resolves itself very quickly and is quite rare so never bothered to dig
