I have been looking at tv's on the dick smith website and some plasma,led,lcd tv's list that they have a built in freeview tuner and some don't. Are the ones that don't list they have built in freeview the ones that have no built in tuner at all or do they have an analog tuner?

This one says it has dvb-t(freeview):

The Sony has inbuilt Freeview.. They just don't clearly mention it.

Yes. DSE is a little light on information in their advertising.
There are a few clues though.

RF input - 1
Audio features - NICAM, A2
From HD broadcasts, HD satellite TV, HD cable, Blu-ray Disc™ movies, and HD home videos, you'll catch each and every pixel in stunning clarity.

All Sony ex models have both Analogue and Digital Tuners. No satellite tuner though as DSE's specs could lead you to believe with their specs.

Best way to check out a TV is a Google search for it's operating manual.

Not the best way at all, as the manufactures use the same model number for different products in different countries.

eg, the UK models will be cursed with a few scart plugs whereas the asia pacific models have some components in their place. Its only when you google the big massive long part number of the TV that you will start to get close to accurate information, and half the sites dont even get that right since they are just copying it off someone elses site.

Some manufactures also have Freeview tuners, but don't actually mention 'Freeview' anywhere (ie: The Sony model you mentioned)

Yep, the warehouse is really really bad at this and should be ashamed now that an analogue switch off date has been announced.

I guess though you can always connect an external freeview tuner box so they'll hide behind that. Also if you're in a non HD coverage area then I guess you're always going to need some external box anyway. Anyone using the satellite service is in this boat.

Not everyone cares about crap broadcast tv anyway. So long as it doesnt say digital tuner in the feature list I think they have done their job.

What is a problem is the dvd recorders etc that have no channel change ability for external boxes and being promoted with scheduled recording etc which genuinly will become useless.

I'm quite happy with it... Saved me forking out for a t-box when they clearly don't work that well anyway!

As for the TV without freeview.. I wouldn't want a freeview TV (unless I had no option). I certainly wouldn't want to pay extra for a freeview TV!

Don't the in-store displays mention freeview or not?

I've had cable here for 9 years and I'm not thinking of changing just so I could get more crappy free-to-air TV. I had to house-sit for someone for a night not long ago and all they had was freeview... I read a book!

If my cable goes out, I'll watch a movie!

Your most likely and exception rather than the rule.

For the same reason as you should not be able to sell analog only TVs at this late stage of life. Imagine someone going and buying a DVD recorder from Hardly Normal and setting it up and finding next year that it's no good. Sure they can buy a STB to go with it but as I found out you have to set both to record a program something that people will get pretty sick of quickly. Consumers Guarantee Act?? I suspect not..

Now tell that same person to go buy a digital tunered recorder. TiVo, Panasonic ?? They would not be overly impressed..
