heavenlywild: I suggest buying a matte screen protector to reduce glare. Plenty available on eBay.

Should I really have to? What sort of design decision arrives at the conclusion that a screen that can't be used in bright light is a Good Idea?

I get you man, but I guess the gloss gives that "shiny shiny" look that people like. Not practical though.

However, I would get one even if it is just to protect the screen. I am afraid that the pen may eventually scratch the surface (mind the pun)?

I'm one of those weirdos who like shiny screens.

I just got my third new pen and although I have just begun to test it so far this one works. I am cautiously optimistic.

Oh well, this one isn't working well either but it's better than the last one. Heading to the shop tomorrow to try one of my pens on their shop model.

Not liking the sound of the pen problems. And there seem to be a few problems according to a quick Google search. Really putting me off the whole Surface Pro idea!

I think it's my tablet. Whenever I have the Device Manager window open it (the window) flickers every time the pen quits or restarts. Pretty weird, doesn't do that in any other open window that I can see. That plus the fact three different pens have the same issue. I was really hoping it was the pen and an easy fix.

Edit: surely if a lot of people had this as a "normal" experience it would be talked about more online? So it must not be very common? Unfortunately I don't know anyone else who uses one I can ask!

nathan: Can you describe the pen problem

The pen just ceases to register on the screen. No dot, no curser, no interaction. Totally randomly, no common factors. And very frequently. Blvetooth and the bluetooth button are not affected.

I tried the fixes on the Microsoft page, tried new batteries, even tried uninstalling the pen driver. I'm out of ideas.

Hoping @nathan can assure us that my concerns are unfounded and I should just go buy one?! The Minister of Finance has already tentatively approved the purchase.

People generally go online to discuss mainly when something is wrong.
Mine is going back for an exchange later in the morning. I just did a reset (same pen problem persists after reset). I'll try another unit and hope there aren't any issues (besides the known firmware ones).

If you do get one be sure to do all the updates before you do anything else and be aware sleep does not work- set it to hibernate instead until they finish the firmware fix which is rumoured to be maybe next month.

You can always return it if you have a problem.

Also, for anyone considering a UAG case for their pro 4, they are very, very difficult to get off. Even with one corner off, the second corner is hard to get off!

Still putting together a package for consideration. Does anyone know how to get the "Microsoft Complete Accident Protection for Surface Pro" if you buy from a retailer? I can add it as an item in the Microsoft online store after adding the Surface Pro, but otherwise it's apparently not available. Retailers don't seem to be aware of it either. Seems if there's a Microsoft shop near you, you just take the tablet in for them to verify and you can buy the warranty. Online or otherwise doesn't seem to be an option. @nathan?

Noel Leeming offering the free typecover seems to be the best deal at the moment.

Microsoft Complete Accident Protection is only available if you buy the machine from MS.

My pen has been fine. I now find it annoying I cannot write on my iMac screen!

I'm waiting on Microsoft to receive stock of the i7/16GB/256GB model. The i7 models seem to have been unavailable for a while. Maybe due to the backlight bleed issue?

I contemplated a Macbook, but when those normally supporting and using Apple also lean towards the Surface Pro it just didn't seem to be the right way to go. ;-)

My only niggle with the SP4 is that for lap use it's not as comfortable as a traditional laptop. I have a SP4 for work, but tend to use my Sony Duo 11 for casual use. The other thing is the SP4 does tend to 'crash' every now and then, but seems pretty good at self-healing (power button, volume up - for around 30 secs tends to sort it out). Otherwise, a great little piece of kit.
