kyhwana2: Weird. I don't suppose he got the sales person's name? Might be worth reporting to a manager or something.

EDIT: Because i've bought lots of stuff from PBTech and never had any problems, but then again, I know exactly what I want and usually end up ordering through one of the senior sales reps there.

The scary thing is, he spoke to the computer technician there. So you would expect someone in that position to know what parts cost.

Are PBTech approved ACER service agents. Maybe the tech was quoting genuine to maintain the warranty?

Btw, he will need to upgrade from 7 starter to use more than 2gb ram.

Quoting to maintain the warranty? I don't get what you mean. Are you saying they can overcharge because they are Acer service agents? Surely not.

Dad asked for 2GB knowing the machine can only handle that amount as it is 32-bit.

No, just that they may need to follow a policy of using only 'genuine' parts (as in supplied by ACER). Longer supply chain so you tend to pay more in many cases.

Just had a look at PB's price list, hard to imagine it was anything standard:

http://pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=c&p=memory_laptop

Give them a call and ask them the same question with install and get them to break it down for you. Interested to hear the result.

I really doubt that is the case. It is not a good idea to say things like that until you have the whole story.

heavenlywild: Let me repeat - he went into PB, asked for the cheapest DDR3 RAM, and was quoted that price.

The thing is, even if the quote was including labour, it doesn't take over 2 hours to install RAM.

With or without labour, it's a rip off.

PB is usually quite good, so I am very surprised to hear this today and not happy at all.

Do they not have the exact ram listed on their website, that you can check it's price? These days it is not hard to find out the price of what something should be when it comes to computer components.

So the question is, did he end up buying the $115 Ram?

Nope, went elsewhere. Life's short, but not short enough to pay that much for RAM!

I don't know what you are complaining about and I think it's not called for, Sounds like to me you just want something to moan about

He went in asked for a quote! He got the quote of $115

If you don't like the quoted price go else where,

John

John, you should know I have been on these forums for a long time now and this would be my first ever rant.

Over-charging is against the law and situations like this needs to be highlighted. Without rants, companies would get away with anything.

How do you know its 'overcharging' and does it matter? You asked for a quote and got one. I dont see the issue?
Its not as if PB dont want to make a sale - they have some of the best deals and range available.

From the text, it sounds like you only heard second hand. Did you go there yourself and ask for specific parts? Perhaps the wrong parts were quoted.
