heavenlywild: It is easy to climb into people who make a complaint.

I am here to tell you guys about the service. My Dad knows enough about computers not to get his information wrong.

The fact is, the quote is well over and above market rates and the Fair Trading Act is there for a reason.

There's no need to get personal.

well isn't that what you are doing heavenly, climbing into someone but in this case and as a few have already said. without any real information just you saying it was overpriced.

If its over market rates what were the other quotes and were they for exactly the same types of ram.

trig42: And it isn't illegal to overcharge.

Maybe immoral, but certainly not illegal (look at hotel prices in Auckland/Queenstown or Wellington for the RWC)...

EDIT: just checked, the Kingston recommended?RAM for those AspireOne (assume it is a D250) has a cost price?of just under $40, so $115 is rorting it a bit just for the RAM, but I would charge that including installation and certainly not feel guilty.

So you'd be completely fine charging $75 to install some ram for not even a 10min job what a gip most I'd charge is $20

heavenlywild: Quoting to maintain the warranty? I don't get what you mean. Are you saying they can overcharge because they are Acer service agents? Surely not.

No, just that they may need to follow a policy of using only 'genuine' parts (as in supplied by ACER). Longer supply chain so you tend to pay more in many cases.

Just had a look at PB's price list, hard to imagine it was anything standard:

http://pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=c&p=memory_laptop

Give them a call and ask them the same question with install and get them to break it down for you. Interested to hear the result.

Official Jeep dealers are only allowed to quote Original  Jeep parts for services etc.  Its part of their agreement to use the official Jeep brand.  I went somewhere else and got a part for $80 instead of $600 plus freight from US.

Perhaps Acer has a similar policy?  HP used to, but i think they dropped it.

OK, let's get the facts down after talking to Dad.

He verbally asked for the "cheapest" RAM available after he was told there was only one slot available. That's true, just the one slot.

He asked for a quote for the RAM and installation.

Remember, he asked for the cheapest RAM. It's not a special netbook that needs a high spec RAM module, and I'm sure we can all agree about this point.

That's the facts. Now let's lay the "pointless rant" statement to rest.

I will let the facts speak for itself.

Fair rant.

I'm hoping he got quote from someone who's ignorant as opposed to someone who's malicious.

Can we have the breakdown on what model ram they quoted and what price to install said ram?
Those are kind of the facts that arent talking

I did not say that. I said the COST price for the Kingston RAM is just under $40. I would want to make a markup on that, and I'd want to make more than the 5% or so these retailers make.

If someone did not want to use my service, I'm fine with that, but yeah, I'd quote $50 or so to install it. It comes back on me if something goes wrong with it...

ummm they aren't facts just what your dad says. Why not give us what he was quoted on exactly, as in actual type of ram and labour or was it just verbal.

Anyhow this thread is rubbish as it was started as a rant based on very little by the looks and going round in circles, suffice I think people can see it for what it is worth

Im still not even sure if the quote was to install? It wasnt until page 4 that you mentioned he asked for that........
Hence people think that its a rant due to lack of information [/rant]

Let me repeat - he went into PB, asked for the cheapest DDR3 RAM, and was quoted that price.

The thing is, even if the quote was including labour, it doesn't take over 2 hours to install RAM.

With or without labour, it's a rip off.

A quote was asked for and a quote given, the quote is not binding or compulsory. It is not an after the fact charge therefore it is just a high quote and not a rip off.

Caveat emptor

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Using the links already given in this thread:

Netbook is http://www.jbhifi.co.nz/computers/acer/aspire-one-10-1-inch-250gb-netbook-sku-20848/

RAM required is http://pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=MEMKIN1056&name=Kingston-ValueRAM-2GB-800MHz-Sodimm-DDR2

Cost of installing RAM is http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?p=service

It can be seen that the price could be as low as $67+gst.

Spending all of an extra minute looking, the dearest price possible is $99+gst.

I'd be comfortable calling $115 a rip off.  Sure its a quote, but if I was asking for the cheapest option, I'd hope in good faith that I was going to receive the cheapest option.

Which is why you shop around and why you dont complain about a perceived high quote. As was stated earlier, this is a 3 month old laptop.Without knowing the specifics of the quote, there may be warranty issues involved with opening up a nearly new laptop. Perhaps PB quoted based on that. None of us will know as none of us were there....

PBtech doesnt deserve that rant.

PB Tech has not breached the fair trading act or any other legislation. What the fta protects against is companies misleading customers through false advertising etc. That clearly did not happen here. To be honest, if I was from PB Tech and reading this I'd be pleased to have quoted a high price and prevented the sale. Some customers are just too much hard work.

agree Talisker, if its a cheap job wanted then thats usually what you get, unfortunately peoples expectations are for the cheapest price and best quality, two differant things.
