Should I go for a surface pro or are there any better alternatives?? I'm looking for something portable but mostly for around the home.

The Dell Venue 11 Pro is worth a look, as is the Asus T100/T300, imo.

MS says "by the end of august".

i guess that means no one knows. there is a geekzone guy who probably is still waiting to buy his pro 2! (apparently he couldn't get anyone with any stock!)

'Build quality'?

My understanding is that all previous Surfaces have had batteries and other components glued in place.

I am assuming the Surface Pro 3 is the same.

You can't get much worse build quality than that!

Ofcourse Apple does that too and gets many positive reviews on build quality

I guess both companies are well supported by many 'expert reviewers' who can pick up a tablet and instantly assess the 'build quality'. :)

JB Hifi seem to have them, I suspect some other Dell retailers will too, as I have seen a few around in users hands.

Overseas they are cutting the Surface 2 price. Will be interesting to see the price drop here.

I have the Asus T100 its a great device but its only 32bit , the atom chip inside is x64 compatible but there was issues with sleep function atom/ windows 8  , I think the issue is nearly resolved so might be is a couple of Intel atom x64 windows 8 tablets out there now.
