StevieT: I'm a bit disgusted at the plans for UFB from Telecom.

"The cheapest 12 month UFB option for households will be $95 a month for 50 GB at up to 30 megabits per second download and 10 Mbps upload, rising to $159 a month for 500GB on speeds of up to 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload."

I would have expected all plans to have the 100Mbps download capacity. Surely fibre optic doesn't limit the upload to 50Mbps, either.

Hopefully Vodafone come out with better plans.

Odd perspective, its all about offering a variety of speeds and data to appeal to ones wallet and needs. CFH spec the network at 100/50 and 30/10 and 50/10 offered as options at a reduced price, nothing odd there, all other ISPs offer the same.

GPON supports 2400 Mb/s down and 1200 Mb/s up per circuit*. As each circuit is shared across 24 customers, that's 100/50 each.

*I'm not sure whether "circuit" is the correct term.

More circuits then.

- As others have pointed out, 100/50 costs all RSPs more than a 30/10 service from their LFC. Please explain why an RSP should make the entry level products significantly more expensive than they need to be, while also limiting customer choice.

- There are sound technical reasons for the asymmetry of the 100/50 service.

- The asymmetry of the other LFC inputs has nothing to do with Telecom.

If you're going to post this stuff, do yourself (and us) a service and learn a bit about it before going off half cocked please.

Stevie, you need to get with the program, whats offered speedwise is what is offered by all ISPs as thats how the UFB network is designed. You can get GigE symmetric, if you want, please sit first before i tell you the price...........

99% of home owners are happy with the 15/1 from the current DSL, so why do they need 100/50, anyway, back on topic.

True, but, I was expecting more so am disappointed. But, thats life, I'll get on with it and join Orcon who are really the only choice.

Check out TrustPower Kinect's UFB pricing, it is available in Tauranga. Looks like they do Business plans aswell.

Around $10-15 cheaper for comparative products. You can probably use this as a guide as to how low the market will/can go.

(Disclosure:- went from Telecom ADSL to Orcon UFB 30/10 30GB in Aug last year. I use about 15GB data/mth. Wanted to stay with Telecom but no plans then).

Well, I can't say I am sorry I didn't wait. With my free national calls my current price is $30/mth or so less than this offering.

Telecom has had long enough to think this through so I can only surmise that they know what they are doing.

However, I will have trouble advising the people who ask me about UFB to go with this offering. But we all have to make up our own minds in the end and Telecom has the reputation/name.

Lias: On the face it I'm bitterly dissapointed. Did not want to see any data capped plans coming out today.

Should have been the new go large/bigtime, either undercutting Orcon/Slingshot/etc uncapped plan pricing or offering better guaranteed better service at the same pricepoint.

I'd hate unlimited plans ... The data leechers would stuff up any good speed left in the bandwidthnand normal users like everyone else would be worse off ...

I hate this viewpoint as it is just wrong. The way that TCP/IP works it just isn't true. In New Zealand the issue is that the unlimited people are on a separate bandwith pool.

remember that Slingshot 'standard' isn't actually the proper UFB speed, it is restricted at peak times.

For the comparative product you need to compare their 'advanced' plans, which are about the same price as Telecom i.e. Slingshot do 50GB for $97. Telecom do it for $95. Slingshot do150GBs for $107. Telecom do it for $109. slingshot do 250GB for $117. Telecom do 50Gb for $129.

seems pretty comparable to me.

also, the slingshot UFB rollout is still technically a trial and not commercially available yet.

It does.

GPON is 2.4Gbps down and 1.2Gbps up. As CFH have specificed a 24 way GPON split this gives 100Mbps / 50Mbps per port uncontended.

I got two minutes into it before I couldn't stand it anymore.

There is definitely an element of truth in the idea that TCP/IP will even things out, but it doesn't address the economic issues or the fact that ... No, you know what... It's about scheduling a scarce resource - if you set the marginal price for data at zero (what flat rate plans effectively do) you get all sorts of irrational behaviours that make it hard and expensive to provision a network.

Until you've worked on a Telco size network and seen this happen yourself I understand this is a hard message to accept.

it's not so much restricted, as having less international bandwidth available than the Advanced i.e. it suffers from the same sha....err, 'prioritising' that their DSL product does.

Hopefully it will help illuminate the fact that a decent product costs decent money.
