I'm sorry, can someone tell me if there's any logic behind this reasoning? It sounds really stupid to me....

Probably those services decided that the risk of someone being actually in an emergency with a handset and no SIM card is less than the risk of some pranksters removing the SIM card just to keep calling 111 without being identified...

I have just got confirmation this is the same on Vodafone New Zealand.

Great idea to have a FAQ :)

Can somebody please clarify the 850mhz operating frequency requirement.

Am looking at purchasing a Nokia N85 from the states, it is one of the phones that will be available on the XT network. Have looked at the specs on gsmarena and they are as follows:

2G Network 850/900/1800/1900
3G Network HSDPA 900/1900/2100
American version HDSPA 850/1900/2100

No mention of WCDMA, was wondering whether HSDPA is the equivalent of WCDMA?

Yes. You just need to make sure you get the 850 model and that it's unlocked.

Can you just confirm the Sony Ericcson W705a is in fact 850MHz as I have searched the net and its only listed as 900/2100MHz so does this mean it wont actually work in most XT areas and only in the "backfilled" 2100 parts?

This is one of the phones they are heavily marketing

I don't know about W705a, but the W705 is listed as one of the handsets Telecom will be offering.

Testdrive.co.nz clearly states that it's a W705a.

As far as I can tell, TNZ will not be launching any handset on XTN that doesn't do 850MHz W-CDMA. Why would they? It's just not worth the hassle with customers!

Why just not say, for the sake of this conversation, that Telecom will offer the model that works on their XT Network?

Indeed, it would be rather silly of them to offer a handset that didn't work on their network

Also, having had to actually do this a couple of times, the likelihood of a success follow-up contact to someone who has made an emergency call without a SIM is next to nothing in a timely manner. If you force them to use a SIM, you have their number (whatever it is) and can call them back.

Without a SIM, not so much.

iv just been into telecom (the palms) they have two fones that work 1 is the samsung 1 and the other 1 is the sony ericson 1. you can call on them. the call quality is really good :)
