Wheelbarrow01: Just an FYI. Some of Telecom's customers are still on the old school UBS (or FIPD as we sometimes call it) broadband connections. Any customer on UBS wanting to have VDSL must first be migrated over to UBA broadband. The process for this takes up to 2 weeks, after which time the VDSL order can be issued (with the 5 day lead time starting from that point). I suspect this may be what has happened in your case Mallas.

We have been gradually migrating our whole customer base over from UBS to UBA for the last couple of years and I think we are almost complete, however I know there are still some UBS connections out there.

I hope this helps.

That makes sense, thanks! It almost makes sense given that I'm in a 'zone island' of no fibre till after 2016 - all other areas immediately around my zone will either have it before 2016 or earlier. Is this something that we can check easily?

Cheers

Edit; My phrasing annoys me. Was typing on my phone when I posted that and wasn't paying attention. :(

Mallas: For those of you with routers already arriving, when did you apply for VDSL? I made my application on Monday evening (around 8pm) and just heard from Telecom that it'll likely be 2-3 weeks despite having picked the 'within 5 working days' option. :(

I'm hoping this won't prove to be too accurate!

Shoot.

I ordered it online July 8th (Tuesday) Morning, around 10-11AM.
Received Email following day (9th)
Received text same day (9th) indicating install on 11th.
Received router this morning (10th)

Someone else may be better to explain this but basically there are two types of broadband connections in NZ - UBS and UBA.

Telecom (and other providers) used to connect all customers on UBS broadband prior to operational separation from Chorus back in 2008. Under UBS, Telecom had their own provisioning teams who organised the connections end to end and co-ordinated the technicians directly with the service companies ie Downer etc. There was little or no input from Chorus.

Since 2008, all new connections have been provisioned on the UBA platform. UBA stands for Unbundled Bitstream Access and basically means that all providers must buy wholesale DSL services from Chorus on a level playing field. Chorus organise the provisioning and co-ordinate the service company response. All Telecom does now is tell Chorus what service it wants connected, and when.

Part of the agreement to operationally then structurally separate from Chorus is that all Telecom's broadband customers must be moved over to UBA connections within a certain timeframe. This process has been underway for some time and is (I believe) nearly complete. All new connections since 2008 have been on the new system.

I suspect someone else on here will be able to provide a more articulate answer but i think I have the basic principle right.

Shindig: boo hiss... cant get it!voicemail left on phone!

Apparently I can't get it either due to attenuation being too high, but I'm wondering if this is because I don't have a master splitter installed and I'm running a 30M phone cable from the phone jack to my router (under the house as well)

The attenuation rating Chorus gives us is from your street to avoid any internal wiring issues, if this is over 10.8dB from your street it gets to the point it's literally not worth installing VDSL and Chorus will refuse to do so, since you don't have a master filter installed it might be worth getting one and not using the extension cable to give you the best ADSL speeds you possibly can achieve.

Is that same attenuation rating that you've been giving us when we've PM'd you for a line check? Or is that all the way to the Modem?

What does that mean? Measured at the point where the cable reaches just outside your property?

Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.

Big thanks to Simon who has helped out with my connection.

My original install plan date had to be changed for a later date. I now have a third install date which is in between the first and second, so can't complain there.

During the last few days he has kept me in contact with the updates, explanations of date changes and phone calls to give me a heads up.
Big props to Simon and the team for what I imagine is a hectic time.

The reading I have been sending out is from the street, it's more or less an estimation. For those that come up as inconclusive Chorus run a manual check to see if they've got their figures right before attempting an install.
