I would have thought in the case of serious network outages (especially on a regular basis) less people are affected.

I would have thought that putting more effort into the 2 RNCs so they dont fail would be better than just having more of them to minimize problems when they do fail.

Perhaps the 2x RNC's are Psychic and are instrucred never to fail.? Or else.

What capacity issues? Telecom certainly don't have capacity issues.

What I am commenting is people who are jumping of the "2 RNC's is not enough" bandwagon without presenting any evidence at all to back their claims.

Two serious network outages within five weeks. Is that enough evidence.

johnr is right there is far more to a mobile network than RNC's alone.

One does wonder if we keep reinventing technologies badly, the old landline telephone exchange systems could be clustered together, and when one of them had a fault they handed over all their calls to another exchange and rebooted. No downtime, and this was 20-30 years ago. I did some more reading and the RNC's can only do this if you use IP from your cell sites 's right through your network and from what someone else said in another group both VF and XT use older telco style connections to sites.

I don't think Telecom have capacity issues, I suspect if you added 4x as many mobiles onto their network right now it would be fine, it's not capacity thats the problem, it's relability, and the process to bring their RNC's online need a lot of work :-)

Chris from gen-i in his webcast talked about the problems they had initially because of broadcast storms once the RNC was backonline but so many cell sites (?) were trying to register no one could, from this article

It seems like you bring a cell site back online, but with only a few channels, and then slowly keep stepping it back up. It's all very interesting anyways.
