The little things make the biggest difference.
trig42: I think if that fails, I will just bug faults until they do something about my line - it IS really noisy on the phone, and my ADSL speeds have dropped from a real world (not speedtest) 12-14 mbps to about 5 or 6 since the last time I had chorus around to fix the line when a truck or something knocked it off the pole outside.
wasabi2k: Anyone know if there is any way to get an indication of when the chorus guy will drop by?
I have a text saying by 7PM, but don't really fancy a day off waiting for him.

Emailed Customer Service.
Apparently the tech usually arrives between 1PM and 5PM.
Guess I am taking the afternoon off.

I should be able to get VDSL (Chorus has said so) but my attenuation is also about 50% higher than it should be. My current ISP doesn't offer VDSL but Telecom's pricing may be better than what I'm paying for ADSL now so I want to move but of course I need to get the fault fixed first. I logged it with my current ISP on Monday but haven't heard anything yet...
Does anyone know whether it's possible to move to Telecom VDSL and get faults out at the same time? That'd save fighting with my current ISP, only to leave them as soon as the line is fixed!
Side note: The Telecom site is a bit confusing. When you go to order, it asks whether you're already with Telecom (which I took to mean "do you have a Telecom account?") or new to Telecom. I have my cellphone with Telecom but it wouldn't let me proceed without a landline number. If I pick "new to Telecom" will it ask for my account number or would I end up with two accounts?
Yyrael: Best to get your fault fixed with your current provider.

lchiu7: OK I have taken the plunge and ordered VDSL service.
The Chorus map was not clear if I could get it (I'm on the edge) but the house next door shows > 20Mbs so it pretty likely.
Telecom's test was inconclusive so they had to place the order. I guess I will find out when they come if it works or not.
A couple of queries came up during the call that I wonder if fellow GZ'ers can help with.
Firstly they are sending a new modem, presumably a Thompson. I use Unblock US and to change DNS servers on the Technicolor modem currently I have to CLI into the modem to make that change. That's pretty annoying.
Does the Thompson have a better GUI?
They also said they need to run Cat5 from the ETP to the modem. Is that correct? There is no kit in the demarc, just twisted pairs to the modem. Does she mean they want to run a new CAT5 run from the demarc to the modem?
Finally they said I would need a splitter. But it doesn't really jive with the fact they want to run CAT5 to the modem. I actually don't have a phone on my current Telecom DSL service and won't be putting one on.
I guess I will find out next week when the tech comes.

Ergh - I could have told you about the GUI question if it was a couple of weeks earlier - I just setup mine in bridging mode recently... I hope you're aware that you will get sub-par Akamai and Google performance if you don't use the Telecom DNS servers. If that doesn't worry you, then go ahead and use the Unblockus servers... (Or if you plan to switch them back and forwards - but it's probably easier to make the change on your PC - you can get software or write batch files to switch them back and forwards with a single click)
My installer ran new Cat5 from the ETP to the master jack. Technically they don't always have to as they are only using one pair (well two in my case as they looped it back for the alarm)
Yes, you need a splitter. They will install it (replacing an older splitter if necessary).
Cheers - N

When the installer ran new CAT5 did they do it outside the house or inside? I can't see any way of doing inside my house (my connection is on the second floor) without going outside the house to get to it.
But I will see when I get there I guess.
