plambrechtsen: Yes there are plans to launch VDSL. Can't comment more than that.
Damager: I've been with Telecom for years but waited long enough for Telecom to bring VDSL. I wanted the higher upload speed. It really annoys me that I'm splitting up my phone and broadband now.. But will give FFM a go.
hio77:quickymart: I want to check if my address can get VDSL (I think it can) but it looks like Chorus has changed the address checker and it doesn't show VDSL availability anymore - not that I can see, anyway.
call snap and have them run a pre-qual, for me i was just outside of the vdsl line on sat, and just outside of the 20mbit section on maps.
that would indicate outside of vdsl range and thus attentions should be to be expected over 10db, however prequal was 3db, and synced at 4db.. clearly within range, would seem a few cabinets are missed..
going slightly off topic, but apparently my parents home is in the greater than 5mbit range, while sitting at 60db attention and thus 2.5mbit is about the max that will get..
so personally i wouldnt put too much heart into the maps

I'm with Xtra and can't change ISP's due to my circumstances but was just wanting to know if I can get VDSL. If it's any help I'm about 600m from the Birkenhead exchange, which supplies me with my ADSL connection.
Yyrael:VDSL is effective to within 1.5km of a cabinet/exchange (approx.) to my knowledge so you should be fine. If you want to send me an email on josh.savage@telecom.co.nz I'll check for you.

Damager: Experts please check my stats below. Just connected VDSL with Full Flavour Media. I'm about 70 metres from the local cabinet, and always had good ADSL2 connectivity.
Now connected to VDSL tonight. No master splitter... yet. But decided I'd check to see how i went without the master splitter firstly.

why on earth would you get VDSL but not get a master filter???

I'm so sick of my upload speed, but there are no plans (yet?) to bring fibre here. Gunshy about switching providers.
I've been a Telecom customer for 10 years and have come to trust them as a good quality provider.
As with you, I have been reluctant to change to a new ISP.
But Telecom have been disappointing me for some time now and Telecoms UFB was the final straw.
So I've been investigating other ISPs and in my opinion Snap is the best alternative. Snap offer VDSL and provide for a smooth transition to UFB when available.
Snaps fritzbox is compatible for both UFB and VDSL and has a built in 'dect' base station so you can use your existing DECT-GAP handsets over voip -- the handsets just connect to the fritzbox rather than your existing base station. You also get to keep your current telecom phone number.
Snaps pricing is simlar to Telecom (for the 500gb plan). But snap does offer 0-rated offpeak so if you use that then snap wins on a cost/gb basis.
The negatives of snap is that they are a smaller ISP and I'm not sure if they offer 24/7 support in case of outages. You also need to outlay $345-$395 for a fritzbox but this is one of the best things about the snap service so well worth it. If you don't have dect-gap handsets you may need to allow for that cost too.
Another negative , not specifically Snap related but VOIP does fail if the power goes out or the fritzbox crashes/reboots.
Snap mandate a high connection fee for VDSL/ADSL master splitters -- this is just the chorus fee passed on , but you can arrange this yourself for much less.
So far, I'm talking myself into it.

Also for the cost. But as mentioned before, no master splitter yet.. just seeing how I'd go first without one.

To be honest I am surprised that Chorus let the service order go through without having a tech come and visit and install a Master Filter. I was fairly sure that Chorus have changed their rules and now mandate a Master Filter on all VDSL installs.
A Master Filter really is mandatory on all xDSL (ADSL & VDSL) lines in my personal view.
