I'm really amazed- It's just struck me this outage is now over 4 hours in length- incredible.

freitasm:
sbiddle: One can only presume it's an RNC failure. This is the resourse that controls all the cellsites (node B's) within a network.

While a network has mutliple RNC's there are no "backups" as such.

Interesting that every time I read about a XT outage the official word is "down south of Taupo".

What makes their network above Taupo more resilient?

Presumably everywhere south of Taupo is on a single RNC.

A RNC can handle massive numbers of Node B's and simultaneous calls - many large cities around the world with populations bigger than NZ would only have a single RNC handing things.

Whats with the continued faults on this piece of the network, the RNC?

Is this based in Wellington or further north?

This will be costly in reputation and compensation!

Would be handy if they put this twitter feed somewhere on the Telecom website. My work (like many) blocks Twitter, Facebook etc.

I think that is a bit harsh. People expect timeframes and the posts to the Twitter account have been made by senior people within Telecom.

Then you'd think they know about expectation management- never give a public deadline for an outage you can't then deliver on- Better to say we're working on it with urgency, and not give a timeframe than give one and then miss it.

@zonky, @makx, acknowledged we have slipped past our initial expected restoration time.

What can I say? It's broken and people are working as hard as possible to fix it.
